  • 🚀 Updates from the 5. Cross-Cluster Konferenz Wasserstoff in Hamburg! Alternative fuels—the Next Generation Fuels—are opening new opportunities for aviation, logistics, shipping, and industry. The event focused on the provision and logistics of these fuels and asked some critical questions: What infrastructure is needed to efficiently import and provide alternative fuels? Which technologies and logistics solutions are driving change? And how can companies secure long-term supply? 💡 These questions were explored through three panels, each kicked off by insightful keynote speeches: 🔹 Panel 1 focused on the role of ports as future "energy hubs." A key takeaway? The early response to the Ukraine crisis proved that infrastructure can be built fast when there's a shared goal. Ports have the potential to drive the green transition—provided there's clear direction and manageable bureaucracy. 🔹 Panel 2 explored the current state of play in alternative fuel usage and supply, distribution, and management of these fuels. Carnival Maritime GmbH’s Vice President of Decarbonization, Christoph Schladör, was part of this panel and shared insights with the participants of the conference. Core message from the panel discussion: Hydrogen is set to play a central role across multiple sectors, but the form of hydrogen-based fuels may vary. A massive transformation is needed both ship- and shoreside to enable this shift. 🔹 Panel 3 covered the future world of fuel production under the question if fuel buyers will become producers to accelerate availability and control costs? This thought-provoking session explored how the fuel production landscape may evolve. The discussions reinforced the urgency and potential of alternative fuels. Collaboration is key—let’s push forward towards a sustainable energy future! 🌱⚡ #Hydrogen #AlternativeFuels #Sustainability #Innovation

The Norwegian Cruise Conference: Safety, Preparedness, and Sustainability a Shared Responsibility Over 120 key maritime players in the cruise industry gathered yesterday for the Norwegian Cruise Conference in Ålesund. Important topics were on the agenda.  - We are seeing that this conference serves as a meeting place relevant for a broad range of stakeholders in the cruise industry, says Director General of the Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA) Einar Vik Arset and Acting Director of the Norwegian Maritime Authority, Alf Tore Sørheim.   - It is an arena for dialogue and knowledge-sharing amongst the industry and Norwegian authorities. This is essential for preserving and developing both maritime safety and value creation for coastal Norway, they state. - I note a strong interest in working together on shared challenges, and the large commercial players are serious and dedicated in their work, says Mr Arset.   Sharing a key task Speakers and participants alike share clear common interests in the conference's overarching topics: Safety, preparedness, green transition, and sustainability. The arena is used effectively for knowledge exchange, sharing experiences, and engaging in productive discussions. Participants spent their time efficiently - both following the official program and utilizing breaks to nurture old relationships and form new ones. New ideas also emerge. One of the speakers even shared that it was an initiative sparked during a coffee break at last year’s conference that led to the joint tug exercise between the NCA, the Norwegian Coast Guard, and Carnival Cruises. • 🛳️ Costa Smeralda Sets Sail into History with Dubai’s First LNG Refueling On January 4, 2025, Costa Smeralda, the flagship vessel of Costa Crociere S.p.A., successfully completed the bunkering of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at the Dubai Harbor Cruise Terminal. This milestone marks the first-ever LNG refueling of a cruise ship in Dubai. 🤝 Marine fuels supplier Monjasa, Carnival Corporation Fuel Procurement, Carnival Maritime, and Costa Crociere came together to turn this project into reality. This has been years in the planning, and thanks to this development and the cooperation of the Dubai Port Authority, LNG-powered cruise ships will now be able to sail using this fuel even in the Middle East.    ⛽ The LNG was supplied to Costa Smeralda by the Green Zeebrugge bunkering vessel, filling three tanks with around 3,000 cubic meters of LNG. A single LNG tank filling enables Costa Smeralda to operate for at least 2.5 weeks. "Costa, as part of Carnival Corporation, is committed to leading the way in sustainable cruising. After being the first to introduce LNG in cruises, together with our sister brand AIDA Cruises, we are now also the first cruise line to use this technology in Dubai," stated Giuseppe Carino, Sea-Land Experience Operations Senior Vice President. "On this direction, we are also developing the shore power technology on our fleet, and working on biofuels, new technologies and alternative fuels.” 🌱 The adoption of LNG in the cruise sector represents a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Compared to traditional maritime fuels, LNG is considered among the cleanest fossil fuels because – in addition to reducing direct carbon emissions by up to 20% – it almost totally avoids emissions of nitrogen oxide, sulfur oxide and particulate matter. #SustainableCruising #MaritimeTechnology #CleanEnergy #Collaboration
