European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites. Monitoring weather and climate since 1986.
Info
EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment from space. We operate a system of meteorological satellites that observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This data is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisation's member and cooperating states in Europe, as well as other users worldwide. The service provided by EUMETSAT helps to enhance and safeguard the daily lives of European citizens. They aid meteorologists in identifying and monitoring the development of potentially dangerous weather situations and in issuing timely forecasts and warnings to emergency services and local authorities, helping to mitigate the effects of severe weather and protecting human life and property. This information is also critical to the safety of air travel, shipping and road traffic, and to the daily business of farming, construction and many other industries. Account monitored Mon-Fri 09:00-18:00 CET. For general enquiries, please contact: press@eumetsat.int For user support, please contact: ops@eumetsat.int

In the latest episode of our "Forecasting Innovation" podcast series, hosts Dr. Paolo Ruti and Dr. Christina Bonanati explore the frontiers of technology in satellite operations and #weather science with guest, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF Director General, Florence Rabier. They address the challenges posed by the atmosphere's chaotic nature, with Florence also sharing insights into how machine learning models, such as those at ECMWF's, are enhancing forecast accuracy by managing atmospheric instability. The episode also explores real-world experiments and the future integration of satellite data into these models. To listen to this episode, visit:: https://bit.ly/3ZD8guX

🛰️ It is crucial for #Europe to have an autonomous space infrastructure. We are therefore very grateful to have been able to present Europe's first geostationary sounding satellite, MTG-S1, to journalists from several European countries. With its cutting-edge instrument it will revolutionize weather forecasting by providing high-frequency meteorological data. Many thanks to our guests for the inspiring discussions we had at our headquarters in Bremen – and unforgettable, the time we spent together in our cleanroom with MTG-S1, which also carries the #Copernicus Sentinel-4 / UVN Instrument which will monitor the quality of the air we breathe in Europe. Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) is one of the most complex and innovative satellite systems ever built. TAS leads the overall industrial consortium. OHB is responsible for all six satellite platforms of the MTG system and is also deeply involved in the development of the payloads, among them is at the heart of MTG-S1 the infrared instrument developed at our Oberpfaffenhofen site. It can determine the distribution of temperature and water vapor at different altitudes through the atmosphere. This allows the observation of the movement of air layers in relation to each other, so it is possible to determine particular areas of local turbulence which may indicate the development of a storm system. With this meteorological data, weather agencies can provide more precise forecasts and are also able to give much earlier warnings of potential extreme weather events. We can hardly wait to see MTG-S1 in space – the launch is scheduled for summer 2025. #spaceindusty #future #weather #earthobservation European Space Agency - ESA, EUMETSAT, European Commission, Copernicus ECMWF, Deutscher Wetterdienst, Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr , Thales Alenia Space, Airbus

EUMETSAT European Space Agency - ESA
Meteosat Third Generation – Sounder 1 satellite takes centre stage! 🛰️ Today, media representatives visited the OHB SE clean room to take a look at MTG-S1 - Europe's first geostationary sounding satellite and the second in our Third Generation fleet - ahead of its upcoming launch. Instruments on the satellite will provide high-frequency meteorological data to improve weather forecasting and track air quality across Europe. ⛈️ MTG-S1 will also carry the #Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission, which will help specialists monitor air quality, trace gases and aerosols. Once in orbit, MTG-S1 will join Meteosat-12, an imager satellite already delivering operational data. Cristian Bank, EUMETSAT’s Director of Programme Preparation and Development, said: “MTG-S1 will enhance forecasters’ ability to track rapidly evolving weather patterns and improve prediction accuracy. We have worked closely with the user community throughout development, and now, thanks to outstanding cooperation among our European partners, this remarkable satellite is nearly ready to be deployed. EUMETSAT looks forward to thoroughly testing and operating the satellite in orbit and delivering data that will benefit communities across our member states.” MTG-S1 will launch in summer 2025. Shaping the Future of the EUMETSAT SAF Network: Preparing for CDOP 5 This week, we had a highly productive workshop with the leaders of all eight EUMETSAT SAFs and colleagues from the EUMETSAT Secretariat, preparing for the fifth SAF Continuous Development and Operations Phase (CDOP 5, 2027-2032). We discussed the principles, opportunities, and implications of the priorities that EUMETSAT Member States have agreed upon for the updated SAF Strategy. These principles will shape how the SAF Network evolves to maintain and extend its relevance, collaboration, and innovation. Key topics included: ✅ Operational relevance of SAF products – ensuring their sustained use in Member States’ services and beyond. ✅ New mechanisms for collaboration & innovation – fostering a dynamic SAF Network that effectively utilises shared infrastructure and resources within EUMETSAT and other European frameworks. ✅ Strengthening product usage monitoring & portfolio management – ensuring products remain impactful and valuable. ✅ Identifying collaborative opportunities – enhancing joint developments that maximise the value of SAF deliverables for users. The workshop took place in a constructive and collaborative atmosphere, reflecting the shared commitment of the SAFs to delivering high-value products to users. A big thank you to all participants for their engagement and contributions! Looking forward to the next steps in this exciting journey. 🚀 EUMETSAT CM SAF EUMETSAT LSA SAF EUMETSAT NWC SAF, OSI SAF #SAFNetwork #EUMETSAT #CDOP5 #SatelliteData #Innovation #Collaboration
