ECMI in 2025 Missed our new plans for 2025? Here’s the gist! We continue our work at the intersection of research, policy analysis, and knowledge transfer on national minority issues. In 2025, we focus on key developments in minority protection, language rights, and geopolitical challenges through a range of projects and initiatives: 📢 PLURILINGMEDIA COST Action Leading a pan-European research initiative on multilingualism in media, with key events in Budapest, Rezekne, Ljubljana, and Aberystwyth. Launching a website, social media channels, and videoblog to enhance dissemination. 🇷🇸 MINORITY PROTECTION & EU ACCESSION IN SERBIA Supporting Serbia’s final phase of policy monitoring, with training sessions for civil servants and a high-level conference in May reflecting on progress in aligning with EU standards. 📚 ANNUAL SUMMER SCHOOL IN TALLINN (24–31 AUGUST) Exploring kin-state policies and minority rights, with an excursion to Narva to engage with local minority communities and relevant stakeholders. 🗞️NEW RESEARCH STREAM ON MINORITY DYNAMICS Examining how the war in Ukraine is reshaping policies and security discourses concerning minorities across Europe. A dedicated workshop in October will present findings and facilitate expert discussions. ⚖️ POLICY-FOCUSED RESEARCH & ADVISORY WORK Supporting Portugal & Moldova in discussions on ratifying the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, analyzing intersectionality in minority rights, and engaging with stakeholders on EU enlargement and minority protection. 📖 New Publication Routledge has published ***Minorities at War: Cultural Identity and Resilience in Ukraine,*** edited by Elmira Muratova and Nadia Zasanska. The book, part of the Routledge Advances in Minority Studies series (with Kyriaki Topidi as one of the supervising editors), examines the impact of conflict on Ukraine’s ethno-cultural minorities, focusing on resilience, identity preservation, forced displacement, and humanitarianism. The volume is based on insights from the ECMI-hosted expert workshop "The War in Ukraine and its Impact on Ethno-Religious Minorities in the Region" (May 2023). It offers a minority-focused perspective on the Russo-Ukrainian war, an area often overlooked in existing analyses.
