EPOMEC IN DUBAI REMINDS HOW CONNECTED WE ARE WHEN ONE PAUSES & LOOKS DEEPER Over the past 18 years I have been privileged to work in many countries. Helping make wise use of virtual reality to accelerate skill transfer for young aspiring ophthalmic surgeons has been the blessing of my professional life. That simple honest statement was never more true then when I attended EPOMEC in Dubai on my first visit to the Middle East. I was blessed to work with countless extraordinary Ophthalmologists from Iraq, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Morraco, Iran, Jordan, Syria, Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria. Soft spoken, modest, kind, thoughtful, intellectually curious, and so giving Middle Eastern Ophthalmollgist were a pleasure to engage with. I am honestly still processing just how moved I was to spend time with so many incredible people with equally incredible stories. Growing up comfortable and secure in Canada it’s jarring to sit with a compassionate Ophthalologist from Syria on the week when a regime falls. To have young Moroccans share their stories of how they worked in earth quake ravaged cities is humbling. To speak with Ophthalmogists about efforts to help the people of Gaza is to see what selflessness truly looks like. None of this has anything to do with selling a product. Instead it has everything to do with reminding us that we have similar values and together we have tremendous capacity to impact events and inturn the care of patients. If use of technology like simulation can help such people acquire essential surgical skills to offer quality care then we at Haag Streit are ready to answer the call. This further validates just how connected we are as people despite cultures, languages, religions, and geography. To the hosts of EPOMEC bravo for a job well done and I am counting the days till I can visit the Middle East again.
