This is what is left of USAID. A gaping blank space. So many communities around the world are severely affected by the withdrawal of funds and staff. Within GIG it was reported that in Kenya alone over 40,000 thousand people have lost their jobs – from one day to the next. Apart from the direct effects this is having on people’s lives, the funding cuts risk undoing years of progress in poverty reduction, education, and health care, especially in conflict zones and disaster-prone regions where U.S. aid has been essential. We need European donors to step in fast and not leave NGOs around the world scrambling to fill the gap. This is important not only in terms of financial support but also to demonstrate a dedication to multilateralism and cooperation on issues like climate change, migration, and health. European donors need to offset U.S. cuts and while enhancing collaboration with NGOs and other local partners now! 🌟 Konnektiv is looking back on a busy year, and we’d like to share some of our highlights with you! 🚀 For our technical development team, the year started with the launch of the website Spenden mit Impact by our partner PHINEO gAG. On Spenden mit Impact, you can find out which NGOs to donate to if you want to support a specific Sustainable Development Goal. 💻 Some of the platforms developed by Konnektiv including SKala-CAMPUS, KOPA Berlin, and Kommune 360° have received feature updates, contributing to their ongoing success. 🎉 But that’s not all: we’ve developed further new sites, two of which will be launched in January – stay tuned to find out more! 🤖 We developed a training workshop on the use of AI in non-profit organizations, combining both practical skills and ethical considerations. You can find out more about the workshop on our website. 📚 Our consultancy team led a research project for CODES (Coalition for Digital Environmental Sustainability) and the Umweltbundesamt together with SUPERRR Lab and the Green Web Foundation 👉 Watch out for the four papers to be published soon! 💬 Over the past year, we supported the Innovation Office of the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth. This included a series of roundtables with the German digital civil society on 1) Digital democratic participation, 2) Feminist digital policies and 3) Disinformation and hate speech. 🙏 A special thanks to our partners neues handeln for the ongoing collaboration! 🎤 Geraldine and Tobi hosted many incredible events this year, including Berlin’s prestigious Falling Walls, The Future of Health Summit for Helmholtz, Safer Internet Day for Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection, The German African Innovation Incentive Awards for Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung , The ITF Summit for OECD - OCDE, and re:publica 🌎 Geraldine also delivered several keynotes on global innovation, open source, and of course, AI! 🎁 We’d like to thank all our partners, clients, and collaborators for an amazing year. Aktuell schlummern im SKala-CAMPUS viele neue Features in einem Dornröschen-Schlaf und warten darauf durch ein tolles Team wieder erweckt oder ganz neu gedacht zu werden.

Verantwortungsvolle KI: Ein Blick auf das IMAGINING THE GOOD AI Symposium 🚀 Vor kurzem hatte Omed Mehdizada die Möglichkeit, am IMAGINING THE GOOD AI Symposium von #ai_berlin teilzunehmen, das von Data Natives in Zusammenarbeit mit Ethics in Entrepreneurship organisiert wurde. Das Event brachte Fachleute aus verschiedenen Bereichen zusammen – von Technik und Politik bis hin zu Kunst und Zivilgesellschaft – und bot eine Plattform für den Austausch über die ethischen und gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen der KI. Nach dem Besuch des Events hat Omed uns einige seiner Eindrücke mitgeteilt, welche wir gerne mit euch teilen möchten. Der Beitrag von Erika Cheung, in dem sie aufzeigte, wie wesentlich eine ethische Grundlage in der KI-Entwicklung ist, hinterließ einen besonders starken Eindruck. Ihre Botschaft war eine eindringliche Erinnerung daran, dass die Arbeit von Entwickler*innen Verantwortung mit sich bringt. Dan Nechitas Perspektive zur EU AI-Verordnung hat Omeds Sichtweise auf Regulierungen positiv verändert. Seine Worte, „Sicherheit führt zu Vertrauen, Vertrauen führt zu Akzeptanz, Akzeptanz führt zu Wachstum und Wachstum führt zu Innovation“, zeigen, dass sinnvolle Regulierung der Schlüssel zu nachhaltiger Innovation ist. 🔑 Auch die kreativen Aspekte von KI wurden im Symposium beleuchtet. Portrait XO (https://portraitxo.space/) demonstrierte die Möglichkeiten der Integration von KI als Partner in kreativen Prozessen. Ihr Ansatz, Technologie als Kollaborateur und nicht als Konkurrent zu betrachten, war inspirierend und unterstrich, dass KI weit über ihre funktionalen Anwendungen hinausgeht. Das Symposium hat deutlich gemacht: Die Zukunft der KI hängt von einem verantwortungsbewussten, interdisziplinären Ansatz ab. The last few weeks have been very busy at Konnektiv, especially when it comes to events. As is often the case, there's hardly any time to let the exciting experiences sink in and share them. So, we'd like to bring you up to date on some of the highlights: On October 16, our colleague Fayrouz Eldebani led a workshop as part of the International Futures seminar series in the context of the Managing Global Governance Academy led and organized by the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS). The workshop, on inclusive digitalization, which took place at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, raised key questions about an inclusive digital future. 🌐 During the workshop Fayrouz took the participants on a journey in which they explored the meaning and importance of inclusive digitalization. Critical questions about the different dimensions and levels on which inclusive digitalization is essential played a central role. Digitalization is much more than an isolated consideration of certain technologies, such as artificial intelligence - it is a social issue that affects and rethinks many areas. 🤖🌍 We therefore need an intersectional feminist approach which challenges the status quo and critically examines structural and unequal power relations and overlapping forms of discrimination and marginalization. ✊ The workshop concluded with a panel discussion with three experts who we’d like to thank for their enriching insights: Kudzai Maraire Mubaiwa FSA™ of AfriLabs who talked on Pan African Lessons on Digital Inclusion, Shyam Krishnakumar of The Pranava Institute India who spoke about Digital Public Infrastructure in India, and Alexandra Darby of FEMYSO who talked about Understanding AI Policy and Bias. Their contributions broadened the dialogue and brought exciting perspectives that stimulated intense discussion. Inclusive digitalization means that every person, regardless of disability, social background, gender, age, sexual orientation or other individual characteristics and abilities, should equally have access to meaningful and safe use and design of digital technologies and services and the resulting opportunities, while at the same time ensuring the safeguard of their rights and preventing further marginalization or discrimination. Inclusive digitalization is much more than infrastructural access 👥 For us at Konnektiv, it is crucial to keep asking the question: ‘What can we do to make the web fair and inclusive?’ One thing is clear: there is no digital inclusion without inclusion, no e-participation without real participation. We are honored to share that our Geraldine was invited to speak at a session hosted by the Heinrich Boell Foundation at the New European Forum Alpbach on “New African-European Ambition: Ways Forward in Energy, Climate, and Tech”. Our opening question was whether the so-called “twin transition”is an EU-driven idea. Our answer was yes – in terms of the framings and narratives currently dominating the discourse, but it was also no – in the sense that it is of global significance to connect these two driving factors that are transforming our societies and our planet. Since digital transformation is not an end goal for humanity in itself, but a healthy and fulfilling life for people and the planet is, it is vital to ensure that digital transformation aligns with this objective. The discussion resonated well with the work Konnektiv is currently doing on behalf of CODES—a policy network that has defined the nexus between digital and sustainable transformation in three shifts. During the panel in Alpbach, we emphasized the importance of a social justice perspective on the twin transition, as the people most affected by climate change are often also the ones least benefiting from digital transformation. It is crucial to examine and understand the underlying power dynamics, with both the energy and tech sector currently being dominated by large corporations with exploitative and extractive business models. We discussed what partnership models could look like between Europe and Africa and connected debates surrounding meaningful connectivity and electricity use.
