🤝We would like to congratulate the authors on their Best Paper Publication in the category Knowledge Graphs and Biomedicine: Virginia Calvoa, Emetis Niazmandb, Enric Carcereny, Delvys Rodriguez-Abreu, MD, PhD-, Manuel Cobo, Rafael López Castro, María Guirado, Carlos Camps, Ana Laura Ortega, Reyes Bernabé, Bartomeu Massutií, Rosario Garcia-Campelo, Edel del Barcon, Jose Luis Gonzalez Larriba, Joaquim Bosch Barrera, MD,PhD, Marta Martínez, Maria Torrente, Maria-Esther Vidal, and Mariano Provencio. 🚀 Titled "Family history of cancer and lung cancer: Utility of big data and artificial intelligence for exploring the role of genetic risk," this work explores how AI and knowledge graphs can be leveraged to better understand genetic risk factors for lung cancer. 🔎 Analyzing data from over 15,000 patients, the researchers revealed that a family history of cancer significantly increases the risk of lung cancer, especially in women, younger individuals, and even non-smokers. Key genetic mutations, such as EGFR and ALK, were identified as critical factors in these risks. 👾 This research has the potential to transform lung cancer risk assessment, enabling earlier detection and personalized prevention strategies — a significant leap forward for precision medicine. ➡️ Find out more about the paper here: https://lnkd.in/ekdZD3R2 #bestpaper #bestpublication #Graphs #Biomedicine

🚀 Earlier this month, representatives of the ConnActions – Condividere, Cooperare, Crescere project gathered at the Santa Chiara Lab - Università di Siena of the University of Siena for an inspiring workshop. Financed by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) and coordinated by the Deutsch-Italienische Handelskammer (AHK Italien), the project fosters cooperation and synergies across diverse fields of education and industry. 🤝 The ‘Taste’ network, focusing on dual training systems in food, wine, and hospitality, was represented by Stefania Fecchio (Santachiara Vocational Training Centre) and Dr. Ivana Marenzi (L3S Research Center, Leibniz University Hannover). With 27 partners from the regions of Pavia and Hannover, the network is advancing shared learning and innovation in vocational training. 👾 During the workshop, participants reflected on key outcomes and challenges from the past year and defined their next steps. A highlight was exploring the Santa Chiara Lab, a hub for food innovation, featuring cutting-edge technologies like 3D food printing and sensory tasting rooms, as well as solutions to empower people with disabilities. 🗣️The meeting also included representatives from Tuscany Region, Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIM), BMBF, INAPP (Istituto Nazionale per l’Analisi delle Politiche Pubbliche), Unioncamere - Unione italiana delle Camere di commercio, industria, artigianato e agricoltura, DLR, and Italian and German trade unions. ➡️ Learn more about the ConnActions project and the meeting in Siena: https://lnkd.in/e9QUv-Br #ConnActions #project #Siena #italy

🚀 Exploring the Role of Large Language Models (LLMs) in Education 🤝 On November 8th, around 50 experts and enthusiasts gathered for the “Large Language Models in Education” workshop, organized by L3S Research Center and TIB – Leibniz-Informationszentrum Technik und Naturwissenschaften und Universitätsbibliothek. The goal was to examine the potential of LLMs in schools and universities, exploring both the opportunities they bring to education and the challenges they pose. 🗣️ The workshop fostered an interdisciplinary exchange, with experts from computer science, educational research, pedagogy, and psychology sharing insights and innovative applications of LLMs: 📌 Wolfgang Nejdl (via AI-generated podcast) and Enkelejda Kasneci demonstrated versatile applications of LLMs in classrooms—from personalized tutoring to reading assistants. 📌 Markus Huff and Thorben Jansen presented studies on how teachers and students interact with LLMs. 📌 Cornelius Herz and Alexander Büssing offered a look into the future impact of LLMs on teaching literature and natural sciences. 📌 Christian Burrichter and Johannes Felbermair showcased practical implementations of a personal tutoring assistant in learning management systems, providing a glimpse into what’s possible today. 👾 The day concluded with a lively panel discussion led by Dr. Jennifer Wengler, Michael Sternberg, Thorben Jansen, and Henning Wachsmuth under the moderation of Markus Huff. 💡To summarise, it can be said that the rapid advancement of LLMs presents exciting opportunities, they are not yet fully equipped to meet every classroom need—especially in providing adaptive, individualized support. ➡️ You can learn more about the workshop here: https://lnkd.in/efrwm4Rp #LLMs #Innovation #Education #KI #Workshop

🇯🇵 L3S scientists in Japan 👾 At the end of September, Wolfgang Nejdl and Simon Gottschalk had the privilege of discussing advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) at the NII Shonan Seminar and through guest lectures at the National Institute for Informatics (NII) in Tokyo. 💡 The Shonan seminar, titled “Empowering Local Open Source LLMs,” brought together 30 international experts to discuss the potential of open-source LLMs as community-driven alternatives to corporate models. This four-day event was a rich platform for collaboration, particularly supporting female researchers in AI. 🗣️ In Tokyo, Wolfgang Nejdl presented “Foundation Models for Medicine (and Education)” on how LLMs could impact healthcare and learning, while Simon Gottschalk spoke on “Combining LLMs with Knowledge Graphs,”demonstrating how integrated models can enhance information extraction and news analysis. 😇 Special thanks to Akiko Aizawa and Hideaki Takeda for the invitation to Japan! 🚀 We are pleased to present another Best Publication of Q3/2024 in the category Natural Language Processing, Large Language Models. The paper is titled "𝗟𝗟𝗠-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗴𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸" by Timon Ziegenbein, Gabriella Skitalinska, Alireza Bayat Makou and Henning Wachsmuth. Published in: Proceedings of the 62nd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL 2024). 👾 This research addresses the pressing challenge of ensuring respectful, productive online discussions by rethinking how platforms handle inappropriate content. Rather than relying solely on reactive moderation, this study presents a proactive solution that uses reinforcement learning with large language models (LLMs) to rewrite inappropriate arguments - preserving content while improving appropriateness. The approach significantly outperforms current automated methods and even human benchmarks! This work paves the way for social media platforms to adopt a proactive tool that promotes civil discourse at the content creation stage, thereby improving the quality of online interactions. ➡️ You can read more about the paper here: https://lnkd.in/e97i5iwf #bestpaper #bestpublication #LLM #AI
