While international negotiations falter, courts are leading in standing up to fossil fuel power. South Africa's High Court just stated that coal power is contrary to the well-being of current and future generations. A "climate bailout" is a way to swiftly wind down fossil fuels and transform the economy into a renewable one via bold central bank action. Check out our blog post about it on Green Central Banking.
Writing for Green Central Banking, Kjell Kühne, director of the Leave it in the Ground Initiative (LINGO), explains how central banks are well placed to take long term actions to address climate change and its impacts on financial stability. He recently co-authored a paper with Matthias Kroll of the World Future Council in which they proposed a “Climate Bailout” mechanism where central banks would buy fossil fuel assets in exchange for their owners investing the money in renewables. Researchers Matthias Kroll of the World Future Council, and Kjell Kühne from the Leave it in the Ground Initiative (LINGO) propose a tool to enable companies to sell potentially stranded fossil fuel assets to central banks, reinvesting the proceeds in renewable energy. The paper titled “Climate Bailout: A New Tool for Central Banks to Limit the Financial Risk Resulting from Climate Change” proposes a viable route to decommissioning high-risk fossil fuel assets and help stabilise related inflation, say the authors.
