In northwest Nigeria, millions of people are displaced within their own country. Islamist groups continue to terrorize communities, burning down villages and abducting girls and women. For over a decade, many have sought safety in camps like Mashamari, guarded by the military. Yet, life in these camps remains incredibly tough. Harsh living conditions, limited opportunities to earn an income, and violence against women are daily realities. With little electricity supply and no street lighting, the camps are covered in darkness at night. Do you remember Milagros and her #Priceless blanket? ✨ This beloved blanket has a very special meaning for her —it was a gift during her first pregnancy at just 16 years old. It kept her oldest son, Manuel, warm when he was a baby. Manuel is now 11 years old and lives in the U.S. with his father. "I sent him there so he could have a better life. We talk a lot on video calls, and seeing him makes me happy—but it also breaks my heart that I can't hug him," Milagros says. Through the years, this blanket has wrapped her children in warmth during cold moments—and will soon protect the baby she is now expecting. The ongoing crisis in #Venezuela has led to the largest refugee and migration movement in Latin America in recent history. More than 7.7 million people have fled the country, of whom nearly 3 million have sought refuge in neighboring #Colombia 🇨🇴. One of them is Milagros, now living with her partner and children in #Riohacha in the North of the country. Life is tough for the young family, and they struggle to make ends meet. Since Milagros does not have access to public healthcare, she is grateful for the support she receives during her pregnancy. Our program offers more than just medical check-ups 🩺 —it includes ultrasounds, nutrition guidance, breastfeeding tips, and essential items for mothers and babies, along with psychosocial support. With the support she needs, Milagros is eagerly awaiting her child. "I can't wait to wrap my baby in the blanket that has been with me from the beginning. Remember our recent post about a cozy, comforting blanket? It belongs to Milagros, who became a mother at 16. During those uncertain times, her best friend gave her a blanket that became a symbol of comfort and protection. “Although I may not have much, I still have this blanket; I always carry it with me, because it has sheltered all of my children in cold moments. And when I want to remember my life in Venezuela, I wrap myself in it,” Milagros recalls. Two years ago, Milagros and her family made the difficult decision to cross the border to #Colombia as the economic and social crisis in #Venezuela got worse. Although life as a migrant has been difficult, Milagros finds strength in her blanket. "No matter where I am, that blanket accompanies me. This #WorldChildrensDay, we’re excited to introduce ‘My Healthy School’ – our upcoming project in #Kenya and #Ethiopia, where we currently provide essential meals to schoolchildren in 19 schools! For many students, these meals are a major reason to attend school regularly and continuously. Next year, we’re expanding these efforts, to respond to the severe challenges faced by communities, especially after years of devastating droughts that have wiped out livestock and livelihoods. 'My Healthy School' unites the sectors of #WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), health, nutrition, and environment in one holistic approach. Improved hygiene facilities, nutrition education, and sustainability measures aim to enhance student wellbeing and uplift entire communities. Thanks to the support of the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) and our national partner PACIDA, Kenya, we currently provide meals in Kenya and Ethiopia. With funding from Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), our “My Healthy School” project will build on these efforts.
