#MESAFE will foster #safety in #aviation by proposing validated #MentalHealth assessment methods specific for the sector

Info

MESAFE is a research project Funded by the European Union, commissioned by EASA. MESAFE addresses the challenges of the effective implementation of the Aeromedical certification process for airline pilots and air traffic controllers (ATCOs) with regards to the incapacitation risk associated with mental health conditions. In particular, it aims at providing evidence-based recommendations on new medical developments for the early diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions that may pose a safety risk for aviation, resulting in pilots and ATCOs unfitness or the limitation of their medical certificate for safety purposes. #MESAFE will foster #safety in #aviation by proposing validated #MentalHealth assessment methods specific for the sector. #EASA #EASAResearch #HorizonEU

#MENTAL #HEALTH AND #SAFETY: The contribution of Italian air traffic controllers to the MESAFE project We are thrilled to announce that our colleagues Paola Tomasello - Aviation Psychologist and MESAFE Technical Lead - and François Brambati - Transport Psychologist and MESAFE Deputy Technical Lead - are part of the new edition of the #ANACNA Magazine: Assistenza al Volo. In this new magazine edition, you will find the MESAFE project’s survey results on #Mental Health and #Safety targeted to Air Traffic Controllers.  ANACNA (the Italian Association of Air Navigation Attendants and Controllers) validated the survey questions and contributed to the survey distribution. The results fed the development of the MESAFE recommendations to improve the aeromedical mental health assessment and prioritise mental #well-being in aviation operations, according to #just-culture principles. As Deep Blue, we sincerely thank ANACNA for their valuable contribution to the field of Mental Health in Aviation Safety! Access the magazine here: https://lnkd.in/drn39xSF. Our article starts at page 42. The article is in Italian, however, more information on the MESAFE project can be found at: https://lnkd.in/dExWH84r

  • As we celebrate #EuropeanMentalHealthWeek, we're reminded of the importance of prioritising mental well-being in all aspects of life, including #aviation. With a recent high-participation in the #MESAFE conference, it's clear that #MentalHealth is a significant focus in the aviation industry. This year's theme, "Better together. Co-creating the future of mental health," emphasises collaboration to foster positive mental health. At MESAFE, we've embodied this theme by working together and listening to the voices of those involved in the research—#AMEs, #ATCOs, and #pilots—to ensure our recommendations are centered around their needs, preferences, and uniqueness. To learn more, read our documents and reports on EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency website: https://lnkd.in/dExWH84r #MentalHealth #Aviation #MESAFE

  • Wrapping up MESAFE’s surveys, we asked pilots and ATCOs to share their suggestions on how to improve the aeromedical mental health assessment process. According to the infographic below, they underscored the need for more time and the involvement of a Mental Health Specialist during the mental health assessments. Their emphasis on continuous monitoring, just culture, AME-MHS cooperation, and a preventive approach echoes MESAFE's commitment to elevating mental health standards in aviation. • What challenges do #pilots and #ATCOs have with the aeromedical mental health assessment? The top 3 challenges, according to the pilots and ATCOs who replied to our survey, are the loss of licence concerns, the lack of sufficient resources (time, Mental Health Specialists) and the lack of supporting procedures for mental health assessment and assistance. The figure below provides an overview of all the reported challenges: the biggest the bubble, the most mentioned the challenge. Together with experts’ advice and literature review, these data have informed the #MESAFE recommendations for a usable and acceptable aeromedical mental health assessment process, hopefully making it easier for all the parties involved! What is the role of Peer Support Groups (PSGs) in maintaining #safety?   71% of #pilots and 62% of #ATCOs who replied to our survey think that PSGs are effective to mitigate #stress. Moreover, the 60% of pilots and 63% of ATCOs agree that a close cooperation between Aeromedical Examiners and PSGs would help mitigate the safety risks related with mental health issues. In MESAFE we are working on a comprehensive AME-Peer Support Groups (PSGs) cooperation scheme aimed at defining how PSGs can help AMEs, and how AMEs can help PSGs, while safeguarding EU fundamental rights on confidentiality and sensitive data protection. ✈ On #WorldPilotsDay, April 26th, we sincerely thank the dedicated professionals who play a crucial role in safely connecting millions of passengers around the world every year. This day offers an opportunity to recognise and honour the invaluable contributions of pilots who ensure the smooth operation of #aviation systems, even in the face of challenges. At #MESAFE, we understand the role that pilots play in maintaining #safety and efficiency in the skies: lot of effort, both physical and mental, is required to achieve these goals. Our project aims to support #pilots and #ATCOs by prioritising their mental well-being. Through research, collaboration, and innovation, we are working to develop tools and resources for the management of well-being and #MentalHealth, both at individual and organisational levels. These resources will be soon available: stay tuned for updates! Happy World Pilots Day!

What an incredible finale to the #MESAFEconference! Day two brought even more enriching discussions and insights as we continued our journey towards enhancing #MentalHealth in #aviation. We began the day with the unveiling of 3 MESAFE products: 📌 the user-centred toolkit for mental health management, targeted to pilots and ATCOs and intended to empower them with practical tools for maintaining well-being. 📌the mental health promotion targeted to Peer Support Groups, emphasising the importance of fostering supportive environments around the aeromedical examinations. 📌 the training curricula and materials on mental health assessment and management, targeted to Aeromedical Examiners and Medical Assessors, highlighting the critical role of continuous learning. These products reflect a systemic perspective involving all the interested parties in prioritising mental health. In fact, although MESAFE is specifically focused on the aeromedical assessment of mental health, we still wanted to highlight the importance of building proactive #safety barriers, besides proposed procedures and tools for the aeromedical assessment, which can work as preconditions for safe acts, safe supervision and organisational influences. The day concluded with two panel discussions. The first panel delved into mental health in an international context, offering valuable insights into the global landscape of mental health in aviation. The second panel engaged in global mental health strategy discussions, paving the way for collaborative efforts to address mental health challenges on a global scale. Overall, it has been a truly remarkable event filled with meaningful exchanges, innovative ideas, and a shared commitment to improving mental health in aviation. We extend our heartfelt thanks to EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency for hosting and promoting the project, and to all participants for their invaluable contributions. Until next time!
