But what if behavior is driven more by context than by the individual? Take a moment to reflect—how often does your decision-making change based on the situation you're in? From dinner plans to travel choices, context plays a huge role in shaping behavior. For marketers, this is a powerful reminder: focusing on the diversity of contexts and occasions can often yield more actionable insights than people-based segmentation. After all, the ultimate goal of any model is to drive meaningful actions. 👉 What do you think? With segmentation, it is mostly assumed that people are different. If that would be true, it makes sense to segment people. But then organizations get confused when they observe that their segments behave inconsistently. Why is that? Well, because only a part of behaviour can be explained by how people themselves vary. A big part is explained by the context they find themselves in. For example, I think about what I want for a lazy Friday dinner. What I’ll have? Well, depends. Am I alone or are there more people involved? If I’m alone, I’ll go for my guilty pleasure. If I’m with my partner, it may be Thai food (spicy!). If my daughter eats with us, it’s likely to be Sushi (not spicy!). If she brings friends, it might be burgers (bland but safe). Or you want to spend the night away from home. Where you’d go? Well, depends. Are you on your way to a vacation destination with your car stuffed with bags and kids? Odds are you spend the night somewhere not too fancy and as close to the highway as possible. If you on a romantic date or celebrating some anniversary, you’ll make different choices (I hope.) I’m sure you can think of more. The point is, for marketers it makes more sense to understand the heterogeneity of contexts and occasions rather than of people. The big advantage of such a model over people-based segmentations is that translating it into actions is a more straightforward exercise. And that’s the single most important criterion for any model.

We recently collaborated with Bosch and Klangerfinder GmbH & Co KG on a fascinating project to uncover regional preferences for electric vehicle sounds. As the market for EVs continues to grow globally, understanding how different cultures and demographics perceive these auditory cues is crucial for automakers looking to optimize the customer experience. Our team at resonio and clickworker worked closely with the Bosch and Klangerfinder experts to design and deploy a large-scale research study leveraging our online survey platform. By employing advanced techniques like AB testing and "gold data" quality controls, we were able to gather robust, actionable insights that are already shaping the sound design process for future EV models. Some of the key takeaways from this project that you can apply to your own market research efforts: 💡 Embrace regional nuance: Our findings revealed distinct preferences across Europe, North America, and Asia when it comes to electric vehicle sounds. What's perceived as premium in one market may fall flat in another. Tailoring your product attributes to local tastes is essential. 💡 Prioritize context: We found that the scenarios in which users experience sounds (e.g. starting a sports EV at the dealership) significantly impacts their perceptions. Building context into your research design can uncover more authentic, relevant feedback. 💡 Validate data quality: Implementing smart quality controls, like "gold data" samples, allowed us to filter out low-quality or inattentive responses. Ensuring the integrity of your data is critical for making informed decisions. 💡 Leverage technology: Scaling a global research project efficiently would have been impossible without the capabilities of our online survey platform. Leveraging the right technology stack can unlock insights that were previously out of reach. The insights from this project have been transformative for Bosch's EV sound design strategy. By deeply understanding regional preferences, they can now create products that resonate better with customers around the world.
