That’s right, your second-gen Apple TV and early 2010s smart TVs may be heading to the great tech graveyard. But here’s the real question: 🤔 Are we upgrading our streaming experience... or just upgrading the e-waste pile? Each year, we generate 50 million tonnes of e-waste, and only 17% gets formally recycled. That’s a lot of gadgets with years of life left becoming doorstops overnight. It’s a positive trend, but reliance on new, resource-heavy products remains a challenge. 🥗 Holiday food waste is decreasing: In Europe, food waste dropped by 12%, driven by better planning and awareness campaigns. “Recycling is pointless” 🙄 When influential voices like Elon Musk claim that "recycling is pointless," it's worth taking a closer look at the facts. Yes, plastic recycling is flawed but dismissing recycling entirely undermines its vital role in building a circular economy. Let’s set the record straight: 📊 Recycling rates for municipal waste in the EU reached 50% in 2022, with countries like Germany leading at 67%. Yet, we waste €95 billion worth of materials annually due to inadequate recycling infrastructure (Source: European Commission). 🌍 The Ellen MacArthur Foundation reports that recycling could reduce global CO2 emissions by 2.8 billion tonnes annually, a critical step toward meeting global climate targets. Recycling isn’t the 'end solution' - it’s part of the foundation. Paired with reuse, designing out waste, and closed-loop systems, it’s how we can transition to a future that minimises raw material consumption. The EU’s Net Zero Target: Acceptable, but are we truly on track? The EU's 2050 net zero target is backed by the Climate Law, with clear mechanisms for review and progress assessments. On paper, this sounds solid. However, the European Commission's latest evaluation is a wake-up call: progress is insufficient. To hit the 2050 target, the EU must nearly triple the pace of emissions reductions compared to the last decade. Yet, critical gaps remain: ✈️ Emissions from international aviation and shipping are still excluded. ❓A clear justification for why 2050 is a “fair” target is missing. The question we need to ask: Are we doing enough, fast enough? Implementation of the Fit-for-55 package is crucial, but without urgent action, this "acceptable" target might just fall short of being achievable.
