Researchers have developed a smartphone-based digital holographic microscope that enables precision 3D measurements in real time. This portable, affordable device uses a 3D-printed optical system and smartphone app to reconstruct holograms, providing potential for medical diagnostics in resource-limited settings and educational uses. The system employs a method called band-limited double-step Fresnel diffraction to speed up image reconstruction, allowing for interactive zoom and near real-time imaging. Future work aims to use deep learning to enhance image quality. For more details: https://lnkd.in/dYrfc5_9? #SECORA #innovation

This breakthrough in chocolate production is a prime example of how industries can innovate for a more sustainable future. By using the entire cocoa fruit, Swiss food scientists are not only reducing waste but also addressing broader issues within the cocoa industry, such as economic disparities and environmental impact. Traditionally, chocolate production has been wasteful, discarding the majority of the cocoa fruit and focusing only on the beans. This method leaves behind a wealth of unused resources, contributing to inefficiency and waste. However, by utilizing the cocoa pulp, juice, and husk, this new process maximizes the potential of each fruit, embodying the principles of circular economy. This aligns with the growing demand for sustainability in food production, where reducing waste and making better use of resources are key goals. The innovation also addresses social sustainability. By offering cocoa farmers the opportunity to earn more from their crops, this method can help combat poverty in cocoa-growing regions. Traditionally, the benefits of chocolate production have been concentrated in wealthy nations, while the farmers who grow the beans remain economically disadvantaged. This approach not only increases their income but also encourages local job creation by shifting more of the processing to the countries of origin. Moreover, the environmental impact of traditional chocolate production has been a concern, particularly in terms of deforestation and child labor in Africa. By making better use of the cocoa fruit and potentially reducing the reliance on sugar, this innovation could also contribute to lowering the carbon footprint of chocolate production and promoting more ethical supply chains. In summary, this development in chocolate production exemplifies how industries can innovate for sustainability. It shows that by rethinking traditional methods and focusing on both environmental and social factors, businesses can create products that are not only better for the planet but also for the people involved in their production. #Kudos to ETH Zürich Are you wondering where to start on an innovation cycle with your products or services? At SECORA, we partnered with the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) to tackle a critical challenge: improving the maintenance program for their Collins Class submarine. A recent scoping study had revealed significant reliability issues that, if left unaddressed, could weaken Australia’s maritime capability and threaten national security. We conducted a thorough review of the submarine’s lifecycle and developed a robust, repeatable maintenance process that focuses on predictive and proactive techniques. This approach not only enhances engineering planning and lifecycle management but also maintains operational availability. Our solution ensures the submarine remains at optimal performance while potentially reducing maintenance costs by 10-20% annually. RAN primarily uses the Collins Class submarines. These are diesel-electric attack submarines designed to provide long-range capabilities for Australia's maritime defense. The six Collins Class submarines are the backbone of Australia's submarine fleet. These submarines are designed for a variety of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface ship warfare, intelligence gathering, and special forces operations. In addition to the Collins Class, Australia is working on acquiring a new fleet of submarines as part of the AUKUS partnership, which will involve nuclear-powered submarines to further enhance the country's defense capabilities. This project is set to replace the Collins Class submarines in the coming decades with the first submarine expected to be delivered in 2030. Discover how SECORA helps navies and commercial maritime businesses streamline maintenance, operations, and logistics for greater efficiency and effectiveness. https://lnkd.in/em3BFCVp #SECORA #Navy #Defense #RAN

J. Scott Marcus, an Associate Senior Research Fellow at CEPS, argues in this article that Europe can produce its own tech giants by addressing its investment shortcomings. Despite the common belief that Europe lacks entrepreneurial spirit, Marcus asserts that the EU actually outperforms the US in creating high-tech start-ups. However, many European start-ups fail to scale due to insufficient financing. European investors are described as "timid," with a significant portion of household savings held in currency or deposits rather than stocks or bonds. This conservative approach leaves the EU with twice as much money in banks compared to the US but only half as much in capital markets for stocks and bonds. Consequently, EU start-ups primarily rely on bank loans, which are ill-suited for high-risk ventures without substantial collateral. The disparity in venture capital is stark: the US has €1.3 trillion in venture capital, while the EU has only €72 billion. Funding for firms not yet ready for IPOs is also limited, with EU companies receiving much less venture capital and private equity funding compared to their US counterparts. Marcus highlights the US's regulatory changes in 1974, which allowed pension funds to invest in riskier ventures, fueling Silicon Valley's growth. He suggests that the EU could adopt a similar approach. With EU pension funds holding assets worth €4 trillion and insurance assets of €9 trillion, a significant increase in venture capital investment could be achieved without jeopardizing future pensioners' security. Marcus concludes that the measures needed to foster European tech giants are clear and would benefit the digital sector, pension funds, and future pensioners. He identifies European timidity, conservatism, and the lack of a concrete policy programme as the main obstacles. The article underscores the importance of diversifying investment portfolios and loosening restrictive investment rules to stimulate growth in the EU tech sector.
