🌊 ULTFARMS at the 13th Flemish Aquaculture Symposium: Advancing Sustainable Marine Aquaculture🌊
On December 12, 2024, ULTIFARMS will join key players in sustainable aquaculture at the Flemish Aquaculture Symposium in Oostende. Hosted by EMBRC-BE and VAP, this event is a prime platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and innovation in the aquaculture sector.
Our researchers will deliver two insightful talks that highlight our cutting-edge work:
👉🏻Offshore Aquaculture in Belgian Windparks: Lessons Learned from the H2020United and #ULTFARMS Projects by Jessica Knoop, Annelies Declercq, and Olivier De Clerck (Ghent University) — showcasing our experiences and findings from implementing offshore aquaculture in Belgian wind farms.
🌀 Adapting Native Oyster Restoration to the Scale of Offshore Energy Development in the North Sea by Molly Hughes (Ghent University) — exploring strategies for scaling oyster restoration in harmony with offshore energy infrastructure.
🔅 Innovative monitoring of aquaculture by Thomas Vandorpe - multibeam measurements to predict bivalve crops
Alongside other thematic sessions, these presentations emphasize ecological sustainability, showcasing how innovative approaches can balance seafood demand with marine ecosystem health.

🌊✨ ULTFARMS at #COP29 in Baku! ✨🌊
This week, the ULTFARMS project took centre stage at COP29 during the side event "BBNJ – Breaking the Silos: A Discussion on Synergies and Cooperation for the High Seas," hosted by Maud Oeyen and Arno V. from Belgium’s Federal Public Service Health, Food Chain Safety, and Environment.
As part of this inspiring session, ULTFARMS was presented alongside innovative projects led by Jan de Nul and its partners from knowledge institutes, government agencies, and the Belgian industry. Together, these initiatives are redefining sustainable solutions for #marineecosystems and #OffshoreEnergy infrastructure.
🔆 Highlights included:
🌱 #NatureBasedSolutions: Showcasing the groundbreaking #AquaForest mangrove restoration project in Ecuador
🐚 Active Habitat Restoration: Highlighting the restoration of oyster reefs through the #BELREEFS project (LIFE Belgium for Biodiversity) and Horizon Europe Blue Connect Project.
⚙️ #NatureInclusiveDesign: Our pioneering approaches for offshore energy infrastructure through #REEFCOVERY initiative, supported by VLAIO - Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship and De Blauwe Cluster (Blue Cluster) vzw
Belgium’s Special Envoy for #BBNJ, Willem Van de Voorde, and Belgian Minister for Energy, Tinne Van der Straeten, also delivered powerful contributions, reinforcing the importance of international collaboration for a sustainable blue future.
Our participation at COP29 reflects how ULTFARMS is integrating biodiversity enhancement, climate adaptation, and sustainable innovation for resilient marine ecosystems. ✨
