  • Two weeks ago we had the pleasure of spending three days in London attending two amazing events - the Aerial Cities event organized by Lorenzo Murzilli, Eszter Kovács and the whole DroneTalks.online team, and the eVTOL Insights event where our CEO Christoph Schlettig was invited to speak on a panel about #eVTOL initial operations. We Unisphere GmbH have been part of the advisory board of #AerialCities since the first edition and are happy to contribute to such a great format that brings together all the great minds in the drone industry, combining interesting talks with very different perspectives and great networking opportunities. Not to forget to thank Barbara Pareglio for hosting us in such a wonderful place! Our CCO, Dr. Christoph Selig Selig, had the pleasure of moderating a panel on "Enabling BVLOS Operations at Scale". The panel focused on various support services that help operators standardize and optimize their BVLOS flights, including organizations such as Dimetor, Kongsberg Geospatial, ResilienX and ENAC - Ecole Nationale de l'Aviation Civile. 💡 A summary on our impression of these days It is great to see that the industry is maturing and we are seeing more and more BVLOS applications that provide real value to end users, including offshore deliveries, inspection of linear infrastructure and many more. A very positive takeaway from our three days in London is the incredibly positive feedback we received for our simulation-based flight planning technology, which significantly improves BVLOS #flightplanning by incorporating detailed drone #performancemodels, flight #trajectory #simulation, high-resolution #weather data and elevation models to create an accurate #digitaltwin of a flight that serves as the basis for automated weather risk assessment and pilot task automation - in short, our #digitalcopilot for #BVLOS #drone operations

Last week, we spent our annual offsite with the team in the Alps 🏔️ to reflect on our current strategy, the way we work together, and work on our goals for 2025 🎯. The two and a half days were filled with various workshop sessions, team building activities, and joint cooking sessions. Like last year, we were incredibly lucky with the weather ☀️, allowing us to hold most of the workshop outside with a scenic view of the Alps. We started with a reflection on the WHY of Unisphere, which was one outcome of last year’s offsite and states our mission: "Unlocking NextGen Aviation". One year later, we’re still very happy with it. Why? Let's break it down a bit more to share our perspective on the world and how we position ourselves: Unlock 🔓: At Unisphere, we specialize in simulation-based flight planning that integrates top-notch weather data to automate pilot tasks. We achieve this by developing aircraft performance models, high-performance trajectory simulation technology, and transforming operational weather expertise into scalable software. NextGen 🤖: We work across all types of new aviation, from drones to eVTOLs to HAPS flying in the stratosphere. We also collaborate with traditional aviation to enhance operations with cutting-edge technology. Aviation 🛩️: At our core, Unisphere is an aviation company that speaks the language of aviators, with a deep understanding of operational needs. With our background in the Solar Impulse project, where much of our team was involved in the first solar-powered flight around the world, we understand unique operational challenges and merge this expertise with aerospace engineering to deliver digital, technology-driven solutions. Of course, we didn’t only work but also had fun 🎉 and enjoyed our time together in the Alps. Supported by our Unisphere Spotify playlist 🎶 (find it in the comments), our playlist reflects the diversity of our team, which we believe is key to success by embracing different perspectives to create truly valuable solutions Special thanks to Paul Scheipl for organizing and moderating the workshop!

Read the recap of Michael Anger on the Intergeo & Unmanned Systems Stage.

Profil von Michael Anger anzeigen, Grafik

Founder & CTO at Unisphere - Unlock Next-Gen Aviation to Benefit Everyone

🌍🚁 My recap from INTERGEO 2024 🚁🌍 I had the pleasure of attending this year’s #INTERGEO conference in Stuttgart, where the future of #dronetechnology was the center of attention at the "Unmanned Systems Stage." Here are my top 3 key learnings: 1️⃣ Business Case: Drones are an integral part of GIS. Every third booth either works with, directly provides, or depends on drones. Companies are investing in drones because there is a solid business case behind them, even though, in my view, the conference isn't a must-attend for drone operators. 2️⃣ Value Chain: While drones are central to GIS applications, the real value lies in data processing. Drones are essentially geoinformation sensors that provide raw point clouds and massive datasets that need to be cleaned and processed. It’s no surprise that many companies at the conference were named point-pixel-lidar-cloud-ai. 3️⃣ Going BVLOS = 20x More Difficult: (Not)-surprisingly, most drone operations are still within VLOS (Visual Line of Sight). The step to BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) adds a complexity factor of 20 for operators, causing hesitation to fully adopt this capability. "The importance of legal frameworks and regulatory developments remains crucial to ensure safe and scalable implementations in this evolving space. In Germany, however, the implementation of EASA rulemaking into national and federal law seems to be ground down by bureaucratic friction between national and state levels, where overlapping responsibilities and procedural hurdles cause delays and inconsistencies in enforcement." Operators must be able to rely on information provided by different states and seek standardization at least at the state level. Great to see that the use of drones is becoming more and more a reality. Interesting read in the Handelsblatt article (German Only) about the use of drones by Deutsche Bahn to monitor infrastructure, partly replacing helicopters. Great use case and hopefully just one of many in Germany that will start using #drones to oprimize company processes. The article also talks about distances up to 150km, which will be very interesting from an operational point of view, as #flight #planning for #BVLOS operations over #longdistances is quite challenging, taking into account drone capabilities, operational limitations and the impact of wind on flight time and energy consumption. This is where Unisphere comes in, providing simulation-based flight planning to ensure that flights over such distances are conducted in the safest possible manner, while at the same time significantly reducing the planning burden on pilots. #DigitalCoPilot #Simulation #FlightPlanning #Weather
