UniSysCat (Unifying Systems in Catalysis) unites natural scientists with the aim to revolutionize catalysis research.
Info
UniSysCat stands for Unifying Systems in Catalysis. We are a Cluster of Excellence - a group of more than 250 researchers from the four universities of Berlin and Potsdam, the Charité and four cooperating research institutes in the Berlin and Potsdam area. More than 85 percent of all industrial products come into contact with a catalyst in the course of their production. Catalysis research is therefore not only one of the most important areas of research in chemistry and biology, but is also a key driver in "green chemistry" which focuses on sustainability and the conservation of resources. Here, UniSysCat's innovative research comes into play. UniSysCat is an interdisciplinary research network working jointly on coupled reactions in catalysis. We aim to understand, control and design reaction networks in chemical and biological catalysis. To master this challenge, our research groups are comprising molecular and structural biologists, biochemists and biophysicists, physical and theoretical chemists as well as physicists. The research consortium includes the Technische Universität Berlin as spokesperson institution, the Freie Universität Berlin, the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the University of Potsdam, the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam, Helmholtz Center Berlin and the Leibniz Research Institute for Molecular Pharmacology in Berlin.

The future of chemistry is bright & green 💚. That is my key take away from today's annual General Meeting at UniSysCat - Cluster of Excellence. First, Prof. Arne Thomas presented the research performance of the over 50 top notch researchers uniting biologists, chemists, engineers and physicists with the aim to revolutionize catalysis research: from 1999-2024 altogether 723 publications were achieve, almost 100 in 2024! A strong scientific basis for #deeptech spinouts. Then, Prof. Juri Rappsilber presented the way forward: agile, interdisciplinary and highly ambitious with intrinsic motivation being the major driver. The hole greenCHEM team is fully committed to welcoming lot's of tech-transfer and spin-out teams with innovative ideas based on the best research results you can find in Germany in the field of catalysis 📈⚗️ Without exzellent, fundamental research, there is nothing to transfer - without transfer there is almost no impact for the benefit of our planet. Let's do this - together 🤜🤛🚀🌎💚

It has now been almost a month since the alumni meeting of our EC²/BIG-NSE doctoral program. It was a great two days and we would like to thank all those responsible and all participants for the wonderful time together!! Around 40 alumni came together at TU Berlin and actively participated in several panel discussions. Most panels featured alumni from a range of career paths - academic, industrial and beyond - who shared insights about their current roles, the paths they took to reach them, and the challenges faced in their careers post-PhD. The insights they shared were very inspiring! It has been a pleasure to meet, chat, network and enjoy the time together :) A very big thank you also to the organizer of the event and managing director of EC²/BIG-NSE Jean-Philippe Lonjaret! It's fantastic how you bind the scholarship holders together through activities, events and ultimately your manner, how you create a great group feeling and strengthen the community. And then you also keep in touch with the alumni - amazing! Thanks for coming! Now let's look to the future together ;) EC²/BIG-NSE supports PhD education by recruiting and supporting excellent PhD students from all over the world. The mission of the graduate school is to overcome the frontiers of classical disciplines in catalysis. The EC² program and, by extension, this event, receive funding from the Einstein Stiftung Berlin.
