Well-designed Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) continue to raise the standard of research into healthcare's environmental impact, according to a new technical brief from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Among other frameworks driving LCAs, research into commercially reprocessed medical devices continues to reveal lower emissions and waste compared to their "single-use" counterparts. https://lnkd.in/g25Rt-Kv Additionally, the brief cites quality research to this effect in which AMDR member companies Innovative Health LLC, Cardinal Health, and Vanguard AG - Medical Remanufacturing participated, as well as numerous works by our friend, colleague, and research consultant Cassandra Thiel, and lists AMDR as a source for further information. The healthcare industry has a substantial environmental impact, with 90% of medical device waste coming from single-use items. DHSC’s recent Design for Life report signals an important shift from these products, and we are proud to be taking steps towards this through trials at several sites: 🏥 Remanufactured harmonic scalpels at Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital. 🏥 Reusable laryngoscope handles at Nuffield Health Plymouth Hospital. 🏥 A widespread trial of reusable tourniquets, which can be used up to 10,000 times. "At Nuffield Health we're committed to reducing single use products, so it’s been great to see the enthusiasm of our colleagues, at our sites, who have been trialling reusable devices. 👨🔬🔬🌍 Change of perspective 🌍🔬👨🔬 It was just over 13 years ago when I started my bachelor's degree in biosciences at the University of Osnabrück in October 2011. One major weakness back then: during my studies, there was almost no focus on career prospects as a biologist. A real idea of what you can do with your degree and in which areas you can work was not conveyed. ❗ A problem that does not only affect biology students. Many students of all kinds of subjects are not really aware of what they can do with their degree or who might be a potential employer. ❗ This year, the Department of Biology at the University of Osnabrück has been organizing lectures as part of the introductory week for new biology students by former biology students who aspired to a career outside of science after graduating. 🎓 It is also important that the new students come into contact with former biology students in order to give them a different perspective and show them possible career prospects. An opportunity that I would have liked to have had back then and from which one can only benefit. 🚀 For this reason, today I gave a talk to the first-semester biology students about my work Vanguard AG - Medical Remanufacturing 🌍♻️ as head of laboratory and hygiene conception and outlined my path from studying to the working world.
