Steel #wheels running on steel #rails Rolling contact fatigue is not only a common type of damage found in plain line tracks, rails in turnouts can also suffer from such damage, often in the form of surface-initiated cracking. Fatigue cracks as shown in the image below have reached depths in excess of 10mm which obviously impose a serious #safety hazard as these cracks can cause for rail fractures if they continue to grow. Small defects such as fatique cracks in #rails can easily grow under #excessive or repeated loading from traffic and can eventually cause for a rail to break. Also high tension forces where rails contract or expand when temperatures change can cause for rails to #fracture A good example of a fractured rail recently found on a high speed #railway line is shown in the picture. Detection of internal rail flaws in rails using non destructive testing methods such as #ultrasonic #inspection can often detect flaws in an early stage to prevent rail breaks and ensure safe running of trains. High #friction in the wheel/rail contact area is beneficial to the tractive effort and braking capacity of #railway vehicles. However, the downside is it also causes wheel/rail wear and damage. Therefore, good #rail management is required to optimise the asset life and keep rails in a safe, defect free, and quiet running condition. Metal to metal contact at the wheel/rail interface provides the #mechanics for a range of different types of rail damage. This includes rail wear (head and side wear), plastic deformation (lipping), rolling contact fatigue and thermally induced damage. These can be unique events, or as can be seen in the image, a combination such as side wear, gauge corner cracking, head checks, spalling and corrugation. What the image also shows is the effect #rail damage in case of corrugations have on wear and tear on other railway track components such as sleepers and fastenings which are coming loose due to vibrations in the wheel/rail interface. Currently, rail service life is managed through #corrective and #preventive maintenance strategies although newer concepts such as “controlled degradation” are increasingly being discussed. Time will tell if these newer strategies mature and deliver the benefits they potentially promise.
