Solutions for Improved Monitoring and Management of Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in vulnerable European Seas

Om os

User-oriented Solutions for Improved Monitoring and Management of Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in vulnerable European Seas (HORIZON-CL6-2021-GOVERNANCE-01-14) B-USEFUL will contribute to achieve the ambitious policy goals set out by the EU Green Deal and the Biodiversity Strategy 2030 by developing user-oriented tools and solutions to conserve and protect marine biodiversity, effectively building and improving upon existing European data infrastructures and governance frameworks. To that end, B-USEFUL will provide evidence-based guidance for ecosystem-based management (EBM) in general and marine spatial planning (MSP) in particular to ensure protection and recovery of biodiversity and the sustainable use of European marine resources. CEO de BioInt | Transformer la mesure des impacts & dépendances | Faciliter des actions pragmatiques & fondées sur la science | The Biodiversity Footprint Intelligence Company | Les opinions exprimées sont les miennes

What is the biodiversity equivalent of the 1.5°C? Net zero targets? Tonnes of CO2-equivalent? Analogies have their limits but they're also very useful mental shortcuts to understand a topic quickly. In The Biodiversity Footprint Intelligence Company (BioInt)'s “Translating Biodiversity Goals into Action: A Global Budget Approach”, we argued to apply the same accountability tools which moved climate policies towards net zero to biodiversity policies. We wanted to learn from climate while taking into account the specificity of biodiversity. In the process, we pushed the comparison as far as possible to facilitate understanding of the biodiversity landscape. Thanks to Oliver Dauert for the inspiration for this table! 🔦 Ecosystem condition (EC) & the rest A full column for EC but Species, Genes (the other 2 Convention on Biological Diversity's biodiversity components) & Biodiversity significance bundled? Why? Our thought leadership focused on EC (with arguably the most mature assessments by corporates). The other 3 components are equally important but we could not properly do them justice in this short space so we did not assess them. 🔎 So what are the biodiversity equivalents of climate? 1️⃣ Science: the IPBES is the equivalent of the IPCC It produces global & regional assessments and summarizes modelling of future trajectories depending on policy scenarios. 2️⃣ International agreement: the Paris agreement of biodiversity is affectionately called the 2022 KMGBF, or without jargon, the Biodiversity Plan 3️⃣ Objectives: yes, there are equivalents to the 1.5°C and they include maintaining, restoring or enhancing ecological integrity Several components of biodiversity are deemed equally important & are linked to the planetary boundaries. So the 1.5°C has at least 3 equivalents, on ecosystems (mentioned above), species and genes. Basically the idea is to bend the curve of biodiversity loss, & achieve a Nature Positive world. The 30% of protected areas by 2030 is NOT the 1.5°C equivalent, it's only a sub-target among many. 4️⃣ Global budget: 57 Gt CO2-eq - +440 000 MSA.km2 (can also be expressed with other metrics) Our Biodiversity Brief details how future global budgets could be set and translated at national & company levels. 5️⃣ National budgets: Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) - improved National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP) Each country would commit to ecosystem condition impact reductions. 6️⃣ Target setting: SBTi - Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) 7️⃣ KPIs: t CO2-eq - Ecosystem condition-related metric(s) The Nature Positive Initiative has defined state of nature indicators & metrics covering all the components. 8️⃣ Mosts risks & opportunities: Energy vs Food The oil & gas of biodiversity is intensive cattle farming. 9️⃣ Advantages: Predictable vs Tangible Modelling & knowledge is more advanced on climate but you cannot see GHG emissions. You can relate to animals & plants.
