📢 Breaking new ground in corporate sustainability! Today at #COP16Colombia, we announce that the first-ever science-based targets for both freshwater and land have been adopted by trailblazing companies. 👇 🏔️ The first-ever science-based targets for both freshwater and land have been adopted by global luxury group Kering. 💧 Global biopharma company GSK and building materials company Holcim have adopted the first science-based targets for freshwater. The announcement comes following the conclusion of our year-long corporate pilot program, with the majority of participating companies receiving validation for some or all targets. This positive milestone comes as world and business leaders gather at COP16 in Colombia, where urgent action to preserve biodiversity and stop the destruction of nature have been at the heart of negotiations. 🌎 SBTN’s Executive Director Erin Billman said: “Our corporate pilot has shown that science-based targets for nature are both feasible and valuable, closing a critical gap in corporate sustainability. We’re pleased to see Kering, GSK and Holcim lead the way by publicly adopting the world’s first science-based targets beyond climate; demonstrating that a clear and credible pathway for ambitious action for nature is possible. The time for companies to act is now — responsibly, urgently, and with the ambition that matches the scale of the challenge.” Science-based targets for nature are a key mechanism for companies to deliver on the Global Biodiversity Framework. Aiming directly at the drivers and pressures of nature loss, science-based targets for nature will tell a company if they are taking enough of the right actions, in the right places, at the right time in order to do their part to reverse and halt nature loss by 2030. These much needed targets on nature build on and complement existing corporate targets on climate. 🌱🎯 This is just the beginning. We are pleased to see these trailblazing companies leading the way, and we look forward to seeing more companies follow suit in the months ahead. 🎉 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eTMakv4e 🔗 Explore the companies' targets in our new Target Tracker: https://lnkd.in/eepJiVtA #SBTN #ScienceBasedTargets #ForNature #CorporateSustainability #NaturePositive #COP16 #KMGBF

💧Freshwater use and pollution are driving nature loss - and companies have an important role to play in halting the damage. Heather Clancy, Editor Trellis Group (formerly GreenBiz) reports on how GSK, Holcim and Kering strengthened their water pledges through setting the first-ever #ScienceBasedTargets for freshwater. 👇 The three companies GSK, Holcim and Kering, were part of our year-long pilot program focused on target-setting for freshwater and land, which concluded in June. A further 150 companies that were not involved in the pilot are also engaged in setting science-based targets for their nature and biodiversity plans. Heathy Clancy writes: "Water conservation was among the top priorities for pharmaceutical manufacturer GSK, building materials firm Holcim and luxury brand Kering as they consulted their finance and procurement teams, and other stakeholders to define the first corporate nature and biodiversity pledges validated by the Science Based Targets Network." 🌊 Erin Billman, Executive Director of SBTN, tells Trellis Group.“With global nature loss accelerating at an unprecedented rate, it’s clear that urgent, decisive action is required from governments alike to reverse and halt this trend. For companies, this means understanding their material impacts and dependencies on nature, and taking ambitious science-based action to address and mitigate those impacts.” The article reveals that around one-quarter of sustainability professionals treat protecting nature and biodiversity as a high priority, compared to two-thirds that prioritize reducing greenhouse gas emissions, according to Trellis’ inaugural State of Biodiversity and Nature report. 🌱 🔗 Read the full article to read more about how the trail-blazing companies have strengthened their water targets: https://lnkd.in/eKYGGXQW #NatureLoss #forNature #COP16 #COP29 #COPRiyadh #NaturePositive #Freshwater #WaterLoss #WaterPollution

"As we approach the close of another eventful year, global momentum for nature faces undeniable headwinds. COP16 underscored the gap between ambition and action, with most governments yet to outline concrete plans to meet their targets, and critical issues like financing remaining unresolved. Similarly at COP29 - the climate COP - governments are faltering in advancing the actions needed to stay within the 1.5C warming limit. "These challenges erode the bold commitments and clear signals necessary to tackle pressing global dynamics, including the incoming U.S. government and ongoing geopolitical tensions. [..] As we prepare to engage at the upcoming UNCCD COP16 and Davos, our resolve remains steadfast: turning ambition into sufficient action for a nature positive future." - Read more from Erin Billman, Executive Director, the SBTN in our latest monthly newsletter 👇
