  • In American Shotcrete Association`s Shotcrete Magazine latest publication, we have elaborated on how best to use Dolenco Drain with shotcrete, addressing many of the difficulties with controlling or eliminating water pressure in an easy, safe, long-term, and cost-effective manner. Even with all the technical and efficiency advantages of shotcreting, a major challenge remains in constructing underground and soil retaining structures: The presence of free and capillary water in fissures of rock formations and the non-rocky soil base, which impacts the structure during construction and maintenance. We appreciate input about shotcrete from Charles Hanskat and Cara Baker, in preparation of our presentation to the shotcrete community. https://lnkd.in/gND5Nybf #Shotcrete #Sprayconcrete #Waterproofing #DrainageSolution #DolencoDrain #Lining #Infrastructure #AmericanShotcreteAssociation #ShotcreteMagazine

  • How do you address water challenges in underground construction? Underground constructing, especially in tunneling, is seen as one of the most complex challenges in the field of civil engineering. The presence of free and capillary water in fissures of rock formations and the non-rocky soil base, which impacts the structure during construction and maintenance, is one of the major challenge in constructing underground and soil retaining structures. Water pressure on tunnel structures is an important design challenge that often requires creative solutions to mitigate water flow and prevent potential damage. During construction, you see footprints from incoming water on the floor and on the walls, which forces its way through the designed layers. The occurrence of this, shows that excavating of underground space in rock masses or saturated soil during tunnel construction, changes stress-strain state in soil/rock base and this can affect the concrete lining layers and cause micro cracks. Additionally the changed hydrogeologic conditions of free migration of water in mass, leading to increased hydrostatic pressure on the tunnel lining, which can force water through cracks or defects in concrete, can cause issues during construction and future tunnel operation. The Lyon Turin Railway Tunnel project between France and Italy is a good example of a complicated project, which typically can reveal a variating number of surprises during construction. Because a tunnel lining, as with all underground structures, is often exposed to ground water pressure and therefore requires water management, an integrated drain mesh solution behind the tunnel lining of a shotcrete layer and in combinations with the other design components, Dolenco Drain can safely and efficiently prevent water pressure buildup on the inner lining as seen in a variety of applications around the world. Dolenco Drain is an innovative solution which addresses many of the difficulties concerning water pressure in an easy, safe, long-term and cost-effective manner. #TunnelConstruction #WaterManagement #CivilEngineering #Shotcreting #HydrostaticPressure #TunnelingSolutions #DolencoDrain #UndergroundEngineering #InfrastructureInnovation #TunnelDesign #Waterproofing #SustainableEngineering #ConstructionChallenges #turin #lyon #LyonTurinTunnel #TunnelTechnology #EngineeringSolutions

  • Permanent Drainage Solution for Slope Stabilization Lining in Road Projects   For road projects in challenging terrains with water ingress in soil base, Dolenco Drain is a specialized solution for enhancing durability of concrete lining used for slope stabilization. A unique drainage mesh which is installed between shotcrete layers to form a monolithic slope - covering or supporting - layer which improves water management. Dolenco Drain is installed without anchors, which saves time, reducing initial costs, which is ideal for road projects where time is essential. Embedded within shotcrete layers, Dolenco Drain’s drainage channels effectively divert water, preventing water buildup and prevents the impact of hydrostatic pressure on the final facing or structural lining. This reduces risks associated with water pressure, including potential cracking and degradation over time, especially in high-rainfall or freeze-thaw conditions. Dolenco Drain is applied as a stand-alone solution or combined with strip drains placed behind the initial shotcrete layer. This configuration creates a dual drainage system, permanently preventing water pressure and protecting the final shotcrete lining from moisture-related deterioration, thus extending the lifespan of the slope support structure significantly. Being manufactured from 100% recyclable materials, Dolenco Drain is designed to support sustainable construction practices without sacrificing performance. The flexible design allows it to follow the contours of a wavy surface, accommodating irregular rock masses or soft soil slopes without additional surface leveling. This reduces the need for preparatory work and enables efficient water diversion across varied geological conditions.   #SlopeStabilization #CivilEngineering #RoadConstruction #DolencoDrain #WaterManagement #Shotcrete #SustainableInfrastructure

  • How do you improve the sustainability of shotcrete coatings for slope stabilization? Soil and rock slope stabilization issues is a significant part of civil engineering, traffic and industrial mining projects. The main problem which engineers face in designing and operating of slopes is ground stabilization due to geology, hydrogeology, soil and rock conditions, erosion, different climates, rainfall, humidity, freeze-thaw and snow conditions. Over the years, the use of shotcrete for slope stabilization has increased substantially. In today`s interesting article from Shotcrete magazine of American Shotcrete Association, Mike Ballou and Matthew Niermann are elaborating on their experience in using fibres in shotcrete for slope stabilisation. https://lnkd.in/dKmZ6Yca The creation of a layer of shotcrete lining prevents the free discharge of groundwater, which can lead to the accumulation of moisture behind the supporting layer of concrete. If shotcrete has high permeability and/or the groundwater pressure is significantly elevated, water may penetrate the shotcrete structure and this can lead to degradation of the cement matrix and loss of lining strength. A gradual decrease in the strength and integrity of concrete leads to corrosion of the reinforcement, which greatly reduces the durability of the stabilization solution. When including Dolenco Drain into the design, mounted between two layers of shotcrete or even directly onto the rock surface, and subsequently covered by a final shotcrete layer, Dolenco Drain permanently prevent water pressure on the shotcrete, prevent humidity in the final lining and increases longterm durability. #slopestabilization #sprayedconcrete #shotcrete #waterproofing #infrastructure #sustainability

  • How do you optimise secant pile design durability?   Secant piles are an engineering method used to create retaining walls and deep foundations as a support temporary or permanent excavations in soft and water-saturated soil. This technique involves drilling overlapping concrete piles (with or without reinforcement) into the ground, providing both structural support and groundwater control. Ideal for projects in urban settings, secant piles are commonly employed in basement excavations, tunneling, and other civil engineering applications. However, while secant piles are effective in reducing water ingress, risks related to impermeability can arise. If not designed or constructed properly - such as microcracks in injection concrete due to hardening and the influence of active soil and water pressure during excavation, issues in the area of overlapping due to deviations in the verticality of the piles, or the distance of the groundwater level to the deepest excavation - these piles may fail to create a watertight barrier, leading to seepage, leaking, or even flooding and structural instability of the retaining construction. This can result in uncomfortable use of underground space and costly repairs through injection and ongoing maintenance. To mitigate these risks, thorough geotechnical investigations and meticulous construction and waterproofing practices are essential. However, it is practically impossible to ensure 100% water resistance of secant pile walls in water-saturated soils using conventional waterproofing solutions. To create the optimal design for secant pile walls in water-saturated soils Dolenco Drain is placed between the secant piles and the final shotcrete layer. Thus permanently prevent water pressure on the shotcrete and facilitate the application of a spray membrane, if included in the design. Preventing or minimizing post-injections and repairs, Dolenco Drain is quick and simple to install and comprises a safe and permanent solution. It prevents water pressure and leaking, keeping the underground space dry, and once installed, Dolenco Drain does not have a limited lifespan, and thus it improves the secant pile walls durability. #secantpile #sprayedconcrete #shotcrete #waterproofing #infrastructure
