A massive thank you to Norwegian Offshore Wind for inviting me to Stavanger to present on the cost developments in offshore wind at their annual cluster meeting! While the session was a sprint with much ground to cover in a short time, I hope it provided valuable insights for the audience. As I highlighted on stage, the offshore wind industry has achieved remarkable reductions in the levelized cost of energy (LCOE)—at least up until 2022. However, the past two years have presented significant challenges for the industry. We’ve observed: Increased CAPEX at FID in key markets like France, the UK, and the US, Auction prices rising, and Component costs increasing by 30–100%. Although this isn’t the first time the industry has faced temporary increases in LCOE, these challenges come at a critical juncture when scaling capacity and accelerating renewable energy deployment are paramount. Key factors like rising raw material costs, inflated wages, higher interest rates, and supply chain bottlenecks must be addressed in the coming years. I’m eager to contribute to finding solutions to these challenges. Fluctuating costs have far-reaching implications for all stakeholders in the industry. Whether you’re a developer, state entity, legislator, or part of the supply chain, your strategies must adapt to these realities and focus on mitigating risks. It’s rare for a single event to have such a direct impact on the pace of the green transition - especially for offshore wind energy - as tomorrow’s US presidential election could have. At Green Ducklings, our focus remains on improving the odds for success in offshore wind, and like many of our clients, we’re deeply invested in the US offshore wind market. Today, I had the pleasure of representing Green Ducklings at a seminar in Ålesund, hosted by GCE Blue Maritime Cluster and Innovation Norway. It was an excellent opportunity to discuss the future of the Norwegian maritime industry in the offshore wind market. I will be presenting our study again at the upcoming Norwegian Energy Partners (NORWEP) 2024 Energy Market Presentations event in Bergen next week. Signup is open to all, and I encourage anyone interested to join us for this insightful event. We will also present the study in Oslo later this autumn, with more information to follow soon. The market study highlights significant Norwegian export opportunities in the offshore wind vessel market, particularly in the (C)SOV, CTV, and Cable Laying Vessel segments. We further emphasize the importance for the Norwegian maritime industry to focus on the fixed-bottom wind market for near-term growth and to maintain strong collaboration within the maritime clusters. I look forward to continuing this momentum and exploring these exciting opportunities further with Innovation Norway and the Norwegian maritime supply chain.
