ET Year-end Special Reads
Sanketh Chengappa K G, Director - Professional Staffing, Adecco India, agrees saying it’s time to move beyond traditional New Year’s resolutions and focus on a more targeted approach: career resolutions. The beginning of a new year is an excellent chance to set meaningful career goals that will help drive our professional growth forward.
How to create the best career resolutions: Chengappa shares that for this, one must say goodbye to vague aspirations and hello to actionable objectives. Career resolutions involve outlining specific, measurable goals that align with our long-term ambitions. Rather than merely aiming to “be better at my job,” he advises people to consider resolving to complete a certification in a relevant skill by mid-year. Not only does this enhance your expertise, but it also boosts your value in a competitive job market, he suggests.
Further, Chengappa adds that continuous learning is an essential aspect of career resolutions for 2025. According to the Adecco Group Global Workforce of the Future survey currently, only 11% of global workers are ‘future-ready’ workers, equipped to navigate an uncertain workplace. Employers must recognize and support the potential of all workers to become future-ready. Given the rapid pace of technological change, it's crucial for professionals to stay adaptable and informed. "Committing to ongoing education—be it through online courses, workshops, or industry conferences—will help you stay ahead. This dedication to personal growth can open avenues to new opportunities and career paths." he shares.
Bijender Vats, Chief Human Resource Officer, CHRO, Crystal Crop agrees saying the perfect time for employees to reflect on their career journeys and set meaningful resolutions for growth. Upskilling is a powerful way to unlock new potential and pave the way toward leadership roles. Vats shares however that professional development is only one piece of the puzzle. To truly flourish, employees must also focus on their mental and physical well-being. Companies that support wellness programs that promote both mental and physical health empower employees to maintain a balanced work-life dynamic which is essential for sustained productivity and long-term success.
Networking with purpose: Chengappa highlights that purposeful networking is vital this year as well. Rather than attending events without a clear goal, aim to cultivate genuine relationships that can lead to mentorship and collaboration. Resolve to connect with at least one new professional each month or engage in industry-specific networking groups. These relationships can provide invaluable insights and support as you navigate your career.
Tiwari agrees, adding that one of the cool career resolutions that people can take this year would be to “Network Like A Pro”! At the risk of sounding like a cliché – your network is your net worth, he clarifies! And the truth behind this cliché cannot be overemphasised given how the industry is shaping up this year. In this digital-first age, where employees are seeking more autonomy and a sense of freedom, your connections become your currency. "And no, that is not limited to casual LinkedIn browsing. Set a strong intent to be out there, meet people, attend that awkward mixer or networking events, join professional networks, send someone a DM with purpose and intent. Commit to growing your network and see what a world of a difference it will make in terms of your thinking, outlook, and of course, your career trajectory." Tiwari adds.
Work life integration and growth mindset: Chengappa advises people to embrace the concept of work-life integration rather than striving for balance. "In 2025, focus on resolutions that prioritize well-being alongside productivity. This could mean setting boundaries around work hours or incorporating wellness practices into your daily routine. A healthy mind and body are key to achieving sustained success in any career." he adds.
Vats shares, additionally, that cultivating a growth mindset is essential for long-term success. Embracing both positive and constructive feedback is key to self-improvement and overcoming challenges. "Success is built on consistent effort, teamwork and building strong relationships, while staying focused on long-term goals. Horizontal networking, mentorship and teamwork often lead to better growth." he clarifies.
As a closing note, Tiwari adds, “Another resolution that I believe career driven people should have is to “chase your dreams, not anyone else’s!” Whether it is an additional project at work or a side hustle, pick it up with intent. Be riveted on the career trajectory you aspire to have for yourself and carefully pick projects that will give you experience or exposure in the same desired field.”
