One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that unless you’ve worked in compliance, it’s easy to underestimate how crucial it is to maintain a clear audit trail of the work you’ve done and the risks you’ve flagged. And honestly, I don’t blame people for not getting it right away 🙃 Unfortunately, the reality often sets in when personal liability and potential investigations are brought into the conversation—sometimes years after the fact👮♀️ Take the case of Swedbank’s former CEO, Birgitte Bonnesen. With the second degree decision she was sentenced to prison for gross fraud because of how anti-money laundering issues were handled in Estonia during her tenure. What’s striking is that here we are, in 2024, dealing with documents that go back at least eight years 👀 Through conversations with over 50 compliance professionals, one of the major pain points that stood out was the lack of robust audit trail tools—tools that protect compliance officers, even after they’ve moved on from a financial institution. Estonia has long been recognized as one of the most advanced digital societies in the world, and our approach to cyber security is a critical component of that. 🇪🇪 The national cyber security strategy was developed in response to the 2007 cyber attacks. Estonia also hosts the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE) and has the Riigi Infosüsteemi Amet // Estonian Information System Authority (NCSC-EE) (RIA) to ensure the security of digital infrastructure and provide guidelines and support for public and private sectors. It is only appropriate that Tehnopol hosts one of the most advanced Cyber Security Incubators in Europe, in which Complok was lucky enough to participate. We are really thankful for the experience.
