In a recent interview with #Finland’s national broadcaster Yle, our Academy's Professor Ulla Tapaninen highlighted the risks posed by Russia's shadow fleet, used to bypass oil price caps and sanctions. She pointed out that the fleet not only undermines international regulations but also poses significant environmental and geopolitical threats. Professor Tapaninen emphasized the importance of stricter sanctions and modernized maritime laws to tackle these complex issues effectively. *The article is in Estonian.

🎄 𝗪𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆! 🌟⚓ This year, our employees came together to create a truly memorable Christmas evening filled with joy, laughter and the spirit of giving. 🎁✨ In keeping with the holiday spirit, we connected our gathering to a meaningful cause: all ticket proceeds were donated to the 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱, supporting the next generation of maritime talents. 🌊📚 You can learn more about the fund here: https://lnkd.in/dh9u7PHA Our Christmas evening also celebrated 𝗨𝗴𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘆, with attendees donning their festive (and sometimes hilariously tacky!) sweaters. Did you know this tradition began in Vancouver, Canada, as a way to raise money for a friend’s cancer treatment? Today, ugly sweater parties have spread worldwide, often tied to charitable causes—making it a perfect match for our charity-focused evening. 🎅🧥 As we reflect on this year, we extend our heartfelt wishes to our colleagues, alumni and partners. 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗺 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀, 𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗷𝗼𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁. 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗮𝘀! 🚢 𝗔 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝘆: 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲! 🎓 Today marks a significant achievement in the history of the Estonian Maritime Academy as we celebrate our very first doctoral thesis defense! 🎉 Rasul Niazmand Bilandi defended his thesis titled: "𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁: 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗺 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀." Rasul’s groundbreaking research merges marine technology and sustainability, focusing on designing more efficient and environmentally friendly stepped hulls for small high-speed craft, or glisers. These vessels, which glide above the water thanks to hydrodynamic forces, are widely used across the Baltic Sea and other waters. In his work, Rasul: ✅ Developed mathematical models to optimize hull shapes early in the design process. ✅ Showed how small changes in design can significantly improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. ✅ Demonstrated how these models complement computational fluid dynamics, offering designers better tools for creating high-speed craft that perform efficiently in various conditions, including waves and ice. This research has far-reaching implications for the design of recreational boats, coast guard vessels and other small craft, paving the way for more sustainable marine transportation. According to our Director Roomet Leiger, this milestone reflects a major strategic achievement: maritime studies are now available in Estonia at all educational levels, from hobby courses to doctoral degrees. Our Academy began its doctoral studies in maritime studies in 2020 and today boasts 17 doctoral students working across diverse fields. We are immensely proud of Rasul and this historic step for maritime education and research in Estonia. 🌊 #EstonianMaritimeAcademy #DoctoralThesis #MarineTechnology #Sustainability #ProudMoment #MaritimeInnovation #MaritimeEducation
