🩺 Healthcare IT in Estonia needs an update – but what's holding it back? In an interview with Med24.ee, our very own Margus Kaldma and Vahur metsala shed light on why Estonia’s healthcare IT systems are stuck in the past. With most hospital systems still running on 20–30-year-old software, the biggest challenge is fragmentation—each institution operates on its own island of data. As Margus puts it: "The systems themselves aren’t the problem; it's that the data is scattered, and sometimes, it doesn’t even make it into the central database." While hospitals want better systems, the reality of moving away from legacy software is complicated and costly. So, what's the solution? It’s not just about technology—it’s about creating alignment across healthcare providers, developers, and policy makers. And while new initiatives like the Health Management Dashboard are a step forward, much more needs to be done to unify these processes. This conversation is far from over.
