IREC is the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research, Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya. IREC is a public research center ascribed to the Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda of the Generalitat de Catalunya, in which the Department of Research and Universities and the Catalan Energy Institute (ICAEN) also participate. IREC is a CERCA center and accredited as a TECNIO center. Created in 2008, it aims to contribute to the sustainable development of society and to increase the competitiveness of industry in the energy sector. The center develops research of excellence in the medium and long term, innovation and the development of new technological products and the dissemination of important knowledge and findings to the general public. IREC collaborates with the Government, universities and industry, and this is reflected in the structure of its Board of Trustees. 🚀 Exciting news! IREC researchers from the Functional Nanomaterials Dept. have contributed to the cover of Energy & Environmental Science! 🔬Our latest research unveils how Zn(CF₃COO)₂ additives reshape the solvation structure in aqueous zinc-ion batteries, leading to an amorphous ZnS/ZnF₂ solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). This robust SEI enhances Zn anode stability, suppresses side reactions, and enables ultra-reversible Zn plating/stripping—even at high current densities. 🤝The study is led by Qing Sun and andreu cabot from IREC, in a collaborative work between researchers from IREC - Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya, Harbin Institute of Technology, Zhengzhou Research Institute, and IST Austria, with ICREA - Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats support. 🔋A key step forward in improving AZIB performance and longevity! 🎉 It's a wrap! 🎉 Today, our consortium met online to review the progress made over the past 6 months. It's been two and a half years since our 22 partners from 6 different countries (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey) teamed up in this 🇪🇺-funded R&D project to develop innovative and sustainable recycling and remanufacturing processes for end-of-life Li-Ion batteries. ♻️ Today, we took stock of the progress made and the next steps to undertake within the following work packages: ➡️ WP2: End-of-life LIBs Collection and Characterisation, Digital Tools and Battery Passports deployment ➡️ WP4: Scaling and validation of feasible technologies ➡️ WP5: Impact assessment and Battery Passport ➡️ WP6: Dissemination, Communication, Engagement and Exploitation Onwards to the remaining year and a half! Innovation in CIGS Solar Cells ⚡ At Hi-BITS, we are pushing the boundaries of #solartech by developing semi-transparent CIGS-based solar cells. Our latest prototype features a 50% aperture area, allowing light to pass through while maintaining high efficiency. 🔍 The yellow hue seen in the images comes from the Cadmium Sulfide (CdS) buffer layer—but we are already working on a transparent alternative to improve aesthetics and functionality. 🌇 Why does this matter? Grain boundary engineering is a powerful tool for enhancing material properties—and in our latest work at IREC - Institut de Recerca en Energia de Catalunya, we put it to the test for fuel cell cathodes. We give a new demonstration on how a purely electronic conductor can be transformed into an excellent ionic conductor through thin-film nanostructuring. Why is this important? 🔹 Addressing a key bottleneck: Air electrode activity limits high-temperature fuel cell performance. Our approach achieves remarkable electrode performance without relying on cobalt-based materials or precious metals. 🔹 Bridging the gap between model systems and real devices: While thin-film engineering has mainly been used in model systems, we show its direct application in micro solid-oxide cells, paving the way for more efficient fuel cell fabrication. 🔹 Beyond fuel cells: The discovery of high grain boundary conductivity in a stable material like lanthanum chromite opens possibilities for other applications—including oxygen battery anodes, as we are exploring in our OxyBatt project. 🔹 And finally… this work took 5–6 years of experimental validation—so you might as well give it a read! 😉 #FuelCells #EnergyMaterials #SolidOxideCells #Electrocatalysis Thanks to all colleagues involved!
