A team of astronomers discovered a bright pulse of energy from deep space that occurs every three hours and lasts between 30 and 60 seconds, being the longest period radio transient event detected to date. The team used data from the archives of the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) radiotelescope. ICRAR (International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research) leads the research, in which Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC) and Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya - IEEC participate. https://lnkd.in/dq2S_KAT

The PAUS survey releases a new cosmic distance catalogue to unlock the mysteries of the Universe formation. The catalogue collects data for over 1.8 million objects gathered over 200 nights between 2015 and 2019. It will help astronomers to understand the formation of cosmic structures influenced by dark matter and dark energy, and will help create more accurate cosmic maps. The Institute of Space Sciences (ICE-CSIC) leads the collaboration with 14 institutions across 6 countries: Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya - IEEC, IFAE, Port d'Informació Científica, IFT Madrid, CIEMAT, Durham University, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, University College London, ETH Zürich, Leiden University, University of Portsmouth and Tsinghua University. ICE-CSIC researcher Enrique Gaztanaga has been given the Freedom of the City of London in a ceremony that dates back to Medieval England for his outstanding achievements in space research, data and academia. He contributed to the working group for ‘Measuring the Monument’, which aims to recreate the measurements made in the 1670s to prove that the Earth moves around the Sun, using the London Monument, which still stands in the centre of London and was originally built as a Zenith Telescope. https://lnkd.in/dfXhBrFB
