Got manure? Don’t let it just sit there—make it work for you! Our new animated video dives into the world of pocket digesters—small but mighty systems that turn farm waste into biogas and nutrient-rich fertiliser. Here’s how it works: ✨ Biogas Production: Pocket digesters use anaerobic digestion to break down manure, producing biogas that can power farms and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. ✨ Nutrient Recycling: The leftover digestate is a high-quality organic fertiliser, offering a sustainable alternative to synthetic options. ✨ Environmental Impact: By capturing methane emissions, these systems help cut greenhouse gases, making farms more climate-friendly. 🎥 Curious to see how it all works? Watch our new short moo-vie below! 🐮 Start a conversation about pocket digesters and sustainable farming at https://lnkd.in/ed5p5NcF. #SustainableFarming #Biogas #GreenSolutions #ClimateAction

Getting our boots dirty – Day 2 of the NUTRI-KNOW general assembly! Our second day in Emilia-Romagna took us straight to the field, where we explored novel solutions for sustainable nutrient management. 📍 First stop: Colombaro – Pig Livestock Farm We visited the biogas plant and a manure treatment line featuring solid-liquid separation, flotation, and nitrogen removal through nitri-denitrification. A highlight was the Struvite prototype, which recovers phosphorus and nitrogen as struvite—a key step towards circular nutrient management! And yes, there was plenty of bubbling action! In the video below, you can see the fascinating (and slightly messy) process of transforming pig manure into valuable resources. It might not be glamorous, but it’s innovation in action! 🏭 Second stop: Modena - SCAM SPA Fertilizers Manufacturing Industry We toured the facilities of the Italian company SCAM, a leader in granular organo-mineral fertilisers boosted with humified matrix. The organo-mineral fertilisers have the Environmental Product Declaration. The company also produces water-soluble fertilisers for fertigation, liquid fertilisers and biostimulants—key inputs for improving soil health and boosting sustainable agriculture. A big thank you to our hosts for these insightful visits! These innovations show how circular approaches can help us optimise resources, reduce waste, and improve agricultural sustainability. 👉 Learn more about our project: nutri-know.eu 👉 Learn more about the Struvite Operational Group: https://lnkd.in/ep294akp #CircularEconomy #SustainableAgriculture #NutrientManagement #Innovation #SoilHealth Our consortium: Biogas-E, CRPA - Centro Ricerche Produzioni Animali , Water, Environment and Beyond (WE&B), BETA Technological Center, Federació de Cooperatives Agràries de Catalunya, Irish Organic Association, Ghent University, ESCI - European Science Communication Institute , Teagasc, Aarhus University, Departament d'Agricultura, Ramaderia, Pesca i Alimentació.

🌱 Regenerative Agriculture: A Path to Sustainable Farming 🌱 Farming isn’t just about growing food—it’s about nurturing the land for future generations. Regenerative agriculture goes beyond maintaining soil; it improves soil health, boosts biodiversity, captures carbon, and strengthens ecosystems. How can AI and digital technologies help? These tools empower farmers to monitor soil health, predict outcomes, and manage resources with unprecedented precision. According to Jeff Rowe, CEO of Syngenta Group, the synergy between technology and regenerative practices could revolutionise farming, enhancing productivity while mitigating climate change. However, the transition comes with challenges. Policymakers, industry leaders, and farmers must work together to overcome barriers through education, financial incentives, and innovative tools like carbon markets. Collaboration is key to shaping a sustainable future for agriculture. 👉 Learn more about how digitalisation is driving regenerative agriculture in Jeff Rowe’s article for World Economic Forum: https://lnkd.in/gx9s-ww9 #RegenerativeAgriculture #SustainableFarming #SoilHealth #DigitalFarming

Nitrogen: A Double-Edged Sword in Agriculture The FAO has released its most comprehensive report in decades on nitrogen’s role in global agriculture. While nitrogen fertilisers have revolutionised food production, the report warns that improper use is causing severe harm to air, water, soil, and biodiversity. 📊 What’s the report about? The analysis highlights how 150 teragrams of reactive nitrogen are added to Earth annually through agriculture and industry. To put that into perspective, one teragram equals 1 million tonnes—making 150 teragrams equivalent to the weight of about 750,000 blue whales added to our environment in reactive nitrogen each year! This has boosted yields but has also led to excessive emissions, climate change, and resource depletion. What can be done? 🌾 Promote biological nitrogen fixation through leguminous crops like soybeans to reduce synthetic fertiliser dependence. 🐄 Support better manure management on farms to minimise wasteful losses. ♻️ Encourage circular bioeconomy approaches like organic fertiliser use and redistribution of livestock to balance resources. 🌍 Set national commitments to reduce nitrogen pollution and meet biodiversity and climate targets. 📖 The report also calls on governments, the private sector, and international organisations to invest in high-efficiency fertilisers and promote sustainable practices that balance productivity and environmental health. 👉 Learn more about this pivotal FAO report and its recommendations: https://lnkd.in/dvc2qaEN
