Sea4Value will explore seawater brines as a new source for the sustainable mining of raw materials. This will be achieved by developing and upscaling novel technologies and processes for the extraction of minerals and metals in seawater desalination plants. Through this innovation, Sea4Value will create new business opportunities for seawater desalination plant operators, while simultaneously minimising the environmental footprint. Additionally, this will establish a new local source for valuable raw materials, helping the European industry to shift towards a circular economy and lowering the EU’s dependence on imports. This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement N°869703.

A few weeks ago, we concluded our project by participating in Ecomondo, where we had the opportunity to present some of our key findings. From October 29th to 31st, Aina Amengual Oliver, Project Manager at Catalan Water Partnership CWP, attended the 4th IWA-YWP Spain National Conference, organized by the Young Water Professionals (YWP) state network and hosted at the Universidad del País Vasco/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea. The conference aimed to foster the exchange of experiences, research, and knowledge among emerging professionals in the water sector, creating a platform that encouraged networking and both personal and professional growth. Today I had the pleasure and honor to be invited by the UN Environment Programme and the Cyprus Ministry of Rural Development, Natural Resources and the Environment at the Regional Meeting for the “Implementation of Sustainable Desalination and Application of State of Art Technologies” I gave a keynote speech on “Circular Desalination: Recovery of water, high value minerals and chemicals from seawater, powered by waste heat and renewables. 🌊 Wednesday marked the final event of our project, "Novel technologies in seawater desalination plants to extract minerals and metals from seawater brines," held at the ECOMONDO - ITALIAN EXHIBITION GROUP . 🤝 Consortium members, including Eurecat - Technology Centre, LUT University , University of Bremen, SEALEAU B.V., Aqualia and Catalan Water Partnership CWP, contributed to the event, presenting: ⚙️ The project’s concept and objectives ⚙️ The technologies developed ⚙️ The integration of Sea4Value’s technologies in a mobile lab ⚙️ The results achieved ✔ Held at the Ocean Arena (East Hall) at ECOMONDO and streamed online, the event generated great interest, attracting over 30 attendees.
