About us
The Digital Health Activity (DHA), which is supported by USAID, is an initiative that aims to help Ethiopia improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare services by deploying data-driven and patient-centered digital solutions. DHA, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and partners such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Funded Data Use Partnership, is assisting in the development of sustainable, adaptable, and interoperable health information systems (HIS) that ensure the entire health sector has access to the data, analytics, and skills needed to improve the health and well-being of all Ethiopians. This is accomplished by DHA pursuing three goals: Digitization Deployment of various digital tools that: Enable healthcare providers to deliver standardized services Capture health data to provide data-driven services Data Use Make informed decisions through data-driven analysis Improve access to health services through remote care and consultations Empower patients to control their care with digital health solutions Capacity Building Improve service delivery by empowering competent and caring health care providers Nurture private sector, academia and tech start-ups to bolster digital health ecosystem for sustainability.

The Afar regional health bureau provided a certificate of recognition to USAID Digital Health Activity (DHA) for its contribution in the fight against malaria upsurge in the region. With funding from the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI), USAID DHA has been supporting the region’s malaria emergency response in 14 high burden woredas since June 2024. Federal Ministry of Health Ethiopia’s, in collaboration with partners including JSI Ethiopia’s USAID Digital Health Activity (DHA), organized a national Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Implementation Discussion Forum with them on November 20, 2024. The event, titled "EMR for Better Healthcare Service Delivery," aimed to discuss the role of EMR in enhancing healthcare services. The forum, which was officially opened by H.E. Dr. Ayele Teshome, State Minster of Health, provided an opportunity to review pathways of EMR implementation, highlighting achievements, challenges and future directions. Dr. Helina Worku, USAID Deputy Health Office Director, who also made an opening remark, highlighted USAID DHA's support for EMR implementation and congratulated recognized facilities for their leadership in digital health transformation. Mr. Biruhtesfa Abere, Senior Technical Director of USAID DHA, emphasized the need for the active involvement of non-digital health partners to ensure effective EMR implementation. During the panel discussion, Biruhtesfa outlined key factors for successful EMR deployment, including the need for proactive leadership engagement, the importance of local capacity to maintain and scale EMR across all departments, shared responsibility among partners, and cost-effective scalability. At this forum, Leku Hospital, a health facility supported by USAID DHA shared its achievements and journey, showcasing scalable best practices. The Ministry also recognized USAID DHA- supported six hospitals and three health centers for their effective EMR implementation, highlighting their achievement for paper-free operations. Additionally, four hospitals using the Bahmni system—developed and customized by USAID DHA in partnership with Orbit Health , a local private company—were acknowledged by the Ministry of Health. JSI

On October 18, 2024, #USAID/Ethiopia leadership and representatives met with the State Minister of Health, Mrs. Frehiwot, at the Ministry of Health. They discussed how #USAID’s support for the supply chain through #USAID/Ethiopia-funded initiatives like #GHSC-PSM and the Digital Health Activity (DHA) is improving service delivery and efficiency. #DHA shared updates on eLMIS and eRIS, highlighting recent achievements. The Minister emphasized the urgent need for complete visibility of supply chain data. She instructed #DHA to focus on enhancing collaboration for the sustainability and expansion of #eLMIS, as well as increasing capacity development for health professionals during the project's remaining duration.
