Mobilizing the power and spirit of startups to solve critical economic and social challenges

About us

The Ministry of Labor and Skills and the Ministry of Innovation and Technology, in collaboration with the Entrepreneurship Development Institute, UNDP, and KOICA, are proud to announce the official launch of the Next Ethiopian Startup (NEST) initiative. This groundbreaking National Startup Ecosystem Development Initiative aims to support and empower startups as a key driver of Ethiopia's economy. The NEST initiative is a result of the ongoing innovation for development project with UNDP/KOICA, which seeks to bring institutions together to promote a functional innovation and startup ecosystem framework. This framework will foster collaboration and synergy among stakeholders, reward risk-taking behaviors, and establish a supportive environment for innovation at every stage of its lifecycle. The Ethiopian Startup ecosystem development framework will be guided by several strategic themes. Firstly, it will align with national goals and strategies, ensuring that startup activities contribute to the overall development agenda of the country. Secondly, it will be implemented nationwide, from federal to regional, city, and woreda levels, ensuring that startups from all corners of Ethiopia have equal opportunities for growth and success. The NEST initiative is also aligned with the mission of achieving Digital Ethiopia. Through various activities and programs, it will contribute to the digital transformation of the country and position Ethiopia as a hub for innovation and technology. The four pillars of the NEST initiative include end-to-end entrepreneurship, startup, and innovation support programs; strengthened research and development (R&D) to promote innovation; a focus on quality and problem-solving mindset in learning and research institutions; and active engagement of the private sector as a priority.
