The worldwide nonprofit ecolabel for renewable energy - Together for a 100% renewable world

About us

EKOenergy is a global nonprofit ecolabel for energy (renewable electricity, renewable gas, heat and cold). In addition to being renewable, the energy sold with the EKOenergy label fulfils additional sustainability criteria and funds projects that combat energy poverty. Our label can be combined with all types of sourcing of renewable energy: on-site installations, green power contracts, PPAs, unbundled EACs and more. EKOenergy-labelled energy is currently available in 80+ countries, and counting. By using our internationally recognised logo, individuals and companies demonstrate their commitment to renewable energy and encourage others to do the same. This helps speed up the transition to a 100% renewable world. Users of EKOenergy-labelled energy can use the logo in their publications, on their buildings, and on products made with EKOenergy. The ecolabel is an initiative of environmental NGOs and hosted by the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation.

  • The REC Market Meeting 2025 is just around the corner! EKOenergy is helping prepare the D stream, which focuses on basic information about energy-tracking systems. Today, Steven Vanholme (EKOenergy) met with Eva Klesse, Mayu Sasako, and Samantha Bigwood-Ölz to prepare session 7d. That session will explore why consumers choose renewable energy and use energy attribute certificates. Thanks for the contribution, Eva, Mayu, and Samantha! It will be interesting for both long-time market veterans and newcomers. • We received greetings and photos from a solar project we funded in 2023, and that was finalised in mid-2024: solar-powered pumps for irrigation in an off-grid village in northeast Cambodia. Right now, it's the dry season in Cambodia, but the irrigated gardens and plots are green and produce food! As with all projects we fund, this one also illustrates how deploying affordable and clean energy has many positive impacts: fighting hunger, promoting health and well-being, creating new opportunities, and more! Thanks to all users and sellers of EKOenergy-labelled energy for making projects like this one possible. Together, we can do more.

    • People are working in different parts of a field in northeast Cambodia. There are lots of plots with different cultivations. In the background, there are trees and two towers with water tanks on them. It is a bit difficult to see, but there is also a pole with solar panels on top.

  • Today's newsletter gives an overview of some of our recent activities and concrete results! 🎂 We celebrated 12 years of progress and impactful achievements! 📚 We received 355 proposals in response to our recent call for Climate Fund proposals and are now reading them carefully. 🐣 We compiled good examples of nature conservation on solar farms. ☀️ We continue supporting various initiatives that deploy solar systems in Ukraine. 📈 We added the 8,000th renewable energy installation to our EKOdirect database, which now contains installations from more than 80 countries. 💡 We share news from several recently finished Climate Fund projects, ➕ And much more! If you didn't receive it in your mailbox, feel free to check out the link in the comment section.

  • Russia's full-scale war in Ukraine has now been ongoing for three years. During that time, EKOenergy has taken several initiatives to support Ukrainians in their struggle for existence, self-determination, and democracy, and we are determined to continue doing so for as long as it takes. - Last year, we dedicated €100,000 from our campaign budget to actions supporting the deployment of renewable energy in Ukraine. This sum came in addition to €20,000 granted in 2022 and €50,000 donated in 2023. We will make another donation in the coming months. - With the financial support of the European Solidarity Corps, we have been able to host seven long-term Ukrainian volunteers between March 2022 and now. - We regularly sign letters and petitions calling for stricter measures against Russian fossil fuels. - We continue doing all we can to promote renewable energy worldwide and encourage people to switch to renewable energy. Every bit of renewable energy decreases the need for fossil fuels and helps people oppressed by petro-dictatorships stand stronger. The war against Ukraine is far from the only war raging, unfortunately, but it's a war that is heavily intertwined with the world's energy policy and the world's dependence on fossil fuels. Russia wouldn't be able to wage this cruel war if it didn't receive billions from exporting fossil fuels. Russia is also a prominent promoter of fake news, including fake news about climate change and renewable energy. If Russia wins, the world loses.

  • We started our 12th anniversary in front of the parliament, reminding our decision-makers that the solutions to today's crises exist and are affordable. In between, we had meetings, answered requests, designed materials, and wrote texts. And now we are eating cake with those still at the office! Thanks a lot to all of you who have helped us over the past 12 years. We look forward to more of that. Together, we can do more and move faster!

    • Two photos. On top, there are people on the stairs of the parliament, with signs and banners. Two are holding the EKOenergy flag.
At the bottom, a group of people sits on chairs and a sofa. They are holding cakes, cups and EKOenergy logos. One of the cakes has 12 burning candles on it.
  • We are preparing for EKOenergy's 12th anniversary! We'll celebrate 12 years of productive cooperation, 12 years of renewable energy campaigns, 12 years of multilingual communication, 12 years of working with energy consumers of all sizes, 12 years of nature protection, 12 years of pioneering and leadership, 12 years of international solidarity, 12 years of fighting energy poverty, 12 years of growth and development, 12 years of advocating for climate legislation, 12 years of growing recognition, 12 years of teamwork! Thanks a lot to all those who helped us over the past few years. Thanks for your support, and we look forward to many more years together.

  • On 25 March, Instituto Totum, the national issuer of I-RECs in Brazil, is organising the third edition of I-REC Day Brazil. We are proud and happy to be an official supporter of the event. Brazil is among the earliest adopters of the I-REC Standard and one of the largest and fastest-growing I-REC Markets. I-REC Day Brazil is a unique networking event for companies and professionals from the electricity and biogas sectors and an excellent opportunity to get valuable insights into the latest developments in the renewable energy market. Last year the event was sold out, so, book your ticket in time! 👉 https://lnkd.in/eJTC-4rt EKOenergy has been involved in the exciting developments in the Brazilian renewable electricity market for many years. After we decided to become active outside Europe in 2015, we met with like-minded organisations worldwide, such as Instituto Totum from Brazil. In 2016, we discussed the importance of standardisation with them and exchanged thoughts on how to get large international companies on board. Not much later, Instituto Totum became the official issuer of I-RECs in Brazil, and a European company with activities in Brazil became the first EKOenergy user in Brazil. A lot has happened since then, and we are sure much more will happen in the coming years!

  • As in previous years, EKOenergy helps set up the D-stream sessions of the REC Market Meeting. That stream focuses on basic information about energy-tracking systems. Today, Steven Vanholme (from EKOenergy) met with Dania Piccioli (Faccoli), Stefano Alaimo, Victoria Fiora, and Özgür Akçasoy to prepare session 3d: Understanding the basics - How are energy certificates traded? Thanks to all those involved. It's always a pleasure to discuss, plan, and work with other renewable energy enthusiasts. We look forward to a fruitful conference where both long-term renewable energy market experts and newcomers will have plenty of opportunities to meet, learn, and discuss!
