♻ Insights from our Handbook! 📗 Case Lempäälä & Rudskogen – Electric Vehicle Batteries as Energy Storage 🛻 Did you know that electric vehicle batteries are considered to be at the end of life when energy storage capacity reaches approximately 80% of original? This implies that they can no longer be used in an electric vehicle. However, they can still be used as an energy storage in other applications. 🛻TREASoURcE studies the possibilities of using second life battery packs for energy storage to avoid recycling the batteries back to original elements with significant energy consumption and material losses in the process. 🛻 We built a stationary Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with used electric vehicle batteries at three demo sites in Norway and Finland. Read more about the use case below! #circulareconomy #electricvehicles #EVbatteries #energystoragesystem #BESS #energystorage #electriccars Mathias Winther Thorsen, ECO-STAR, Fride Vullum-Bruer, SINTEF Energy Research

What a week packed with circular economy events it has been! 🙌🚀 On Monday, Nordic Circular Hotspot organised its annual Nordic Circular Summit, held in Helsinki, Finland, with online participation from around the globe. We were happy to participate in this important event, which brought together key circular economy actors from the Nordics and beyond. At the expo area, we shared information about TREASoURcE activities and had engaging conversations with stakeholders. Our cross-value chain approach sparked a lot of questions and interest! Highlighting the aspects of cross-value chain learnings and cross-sector collaboration helped people to see its true value and importance. 💡 The KiertoaSuomesta.fi digital marketplace and Replication Handbook also received well-deserved attention. 📚 These tools not only raise awareness of circular and sustainable practices but also make them more concrete and easier for everyone to understand and apply! 🌱 A big thank you to Kaisa Simola and Tran Ngo for representing TREASoURcE at this key event for Nordic circular economy collaboration! 👏 #TREASoURcE #NordicCircularSummit #NCS2024 #circulareconomy

♻ Insights from our Handbook! 📗 Case Finland – Marketplace for biobased side streams The future circular bioeconomy must be based on the efficient use of raw materials that also supports the use of local resources. In cooperation with farmers, industries, municipalities, and regions, the TREASoURcE project aims to support market development for biobased side and waste streams through a newly launched digital marketplace. The digital marketplace, KiertoaSuomesta.fi (Circular Finland) was developed and published by the TREASoURcE project in summer 2023 to promote the use of biobased side streams from agriculture, forestry, industry operators, and municipalities. The aim is to create new business opportunities and to increase the functionality of the circular economy in the utilization of biomaterials. Read how the digital marketplace was set up and launched! #circulareconomy #bioeconomy #biomaterials #biobased #recycling #recycle #reuse #agriculture Riina Kärki, Nora Berglund

🌍 Circular economy in action: insights from the CCRI Workshop 🌍 Last week, we attended the 3rd CCRI Coordination and Support Workshop in Brussels. The topic of this year’s event was “Making circular investments pay off for cities and regions”. Here are some of our takeaways from the event: 🗝 Key role of cities and regions: Over the past years, important action plans, roadmaps and legislative updates have been announced and issued. With the new Commission, the focus will shift to implementation. Success stories and peer-to-peer learning will be invaluable in translating these actions to local and regional levels. 🗝 From complex to complete: The systemic transition we face is not easy or simple, but with strong collaboration and concrete steps, we can make the complex more understandable, increase the maturity of CE projects, and overcome hurdles together. 🗝 Effective communication and dissemination: These are pivotal in advancing the circular economy. By fostering knowledge exchange, engaging local stakeholders, and widely sharing tools and resources, we can collectively drive the transition towards sustainability. We are proud to be part of this network, as one of the #CCRIProjects developing Circular Systemic Solutions to support European cities and regions in their circular transition. Thank you Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) for hosting this successful event, and Nazif Ugur Kaya, Kaisa Simola and Pirkko Eteläaho for representing TREASoURcE! Psst! If you are looking for more tips on how to leverage communication to support the circular economy transition, keep your eyes open for the upcoming TREASoURcE Handbook for Effective Communication on Circular Economy! 🎯💬 👀

♻ Insights from our Handbook! 📗 Recycling campaign for rigid plastic waste In this article we describe a use case of a rigid plastic collection and recycling campaign, from Tampere in autumn 2023, in which a total of 30.84 tons of plastic waste was collected during a two-month campaign. Read the article to learn how the campaign was planned and what kind of findings and learnings we gained! The campaign was organized by Ekokumppanit Oy - Ecofellows Ltd. with close co-operation with the local Waste Management Company Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto. #circulareconomy #recycling #recycle #plastic #plasticwaste

♻ Insights from our Handbook! 📗 How to Create a Local Bioeconomy Model? 🌾 Future circular bio-economy needs to be based on efficient use of raw materials that supports also the use of local resources. 🌾 In close cooperation with municipalities and the industry, TREASoURcE aims to create business models, form bio-based value chains and explore the possibilities of using urban and rural waste and side streams together, increasing the understanding over symbiosis between urban and rural areas. In this article, Jaana Koivisto from Ekokumppanit Oy - Ecofellows Ltd. explains the first steps of the municipalities of Tampere region (Finland) towards a biogas-based bioeconomy model. Why biogas? ✳ Many municipalities aim for carbon-neutral energy production, to which local biogas production can bring a solution. ✳ The use of biogas in transport offers municipalities a way to reduce transport emissions and oil dependence. ✳ At the same time, municipalities’ recycling nutrient production is increased. This increases security of supply both in terms of energy and nutrients. ✳ Biogas production can utilise side streams that are currently completely unused or for which no final disposal site can be found, such as for example sewage sludge, manure, and spoiled animal feed. ✳ Municipalities can build biogas plants themselves or help local businesses or agriculture to form biogas cooperatives. TREASoURcE policy recommendations for a circular economy 🌍🔄 Legislation can both help and hinder the circular economy transition. In TREASoURcE, one of our aims is to understand the EU and national regulatory frameworks for the three key value chains: plastics, batteries and biobased side and waste streams. Our policy work focuses on mapping these frameworks and identifying key drivers and barriers. 📊🔍 The recently published D1.3 report provides policy recommendations to both EU and national authorities. Our partners are now formulating the most impactful recommendations into targeted policy briefs and white papers for key regulatory audiences. Our goal is to promote circularity from a regulatory standpoint. 📑📈 For further insights, read the blog post by Tran Ngo and Nora Berglund or check the current status of our work below! 💡👇 https://lnkd.in/dZniFYcy #TREASoURcE #circulareconomy #policyrecommendations VTT MTK ry – Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners
