🌿 We’re excited to announce that Ocean Rainforest is now a proud partner in the new TexMaTer project, supported by #HorizonEurope funding! 🚀 Our role will focus on providing cultivated seaweed, including Saccharina latissima (#sugarkelp) and potentially Macrocystis pyrifera (#giantkelp) to explore how sidestreams from e.g. alginate production can be utilized to harness residual cellulose for textile manufacturing. This initiative holds great potential to drive significant environmental impact, particularly in large-scale #seaweed cultivation scenarios. 🌍♻️ #SustainableInnovation #BlueEconomy #Seaweed #TextileRevolution #regnerative
Kickoff meeting: 23 and 24 September! During two days, the consortium gathered at CITEVE to collaborate on developing novel cellulosic fibres and bioformulations for textile finishing using waste from agricultural practices, algae production, and post-consumer home textiles. The meeting included presentations from work package leaders, visits to CITEVE's laboratories and recycling structures, as well as visits to the industrial facilities of JFAlmeida and Mi Casa Es Tu Casa. There were also plenty of networking opportunities and opportunities to get to know each other better! Stay tuned on TexMaTer project! TRIODOS FOOD TRANSITION EUROPE FUND takes equity stake in Ocean Rainforest Triodos Food Transition Europe Fund, based in the Netherlands, has acquired a minority equity stake in Ocean Rainforest. and this marks the fund’s first investment in the sustainable aquaculture sector. In its announcement, the fund highlighted that this investment not only taps into a fast-growing global market but also aligns with Triodos’ commitment to Nature-Based Solutions, given the positive impact of seaweed on biodiversity and its capacity for carbon capture. Ocean Rainforest raised a total of EUR 2.5 million in this funding round, with participation from both existing shareholders and new investors. Current shareholders include leading global impact investors such as Grantham Foundation, Builders Vision, Katapult Ocean, Twynam, and WWF. Adam Kybird, Fund Manager of Triodos Food Transition Europe Fund, commented: “Ocean Rainforest addresses three impact pillars: from an environmental perspective, cultivating seaweed at scale is associated with significant enhancement of marine biodiversity and water quality. Seaweed-based fertilisers and animal feed also contribute to the sustainable agriculture transition. From a consumer perspective, consumption of seaweed-based products improves the digestive system and brings anti-inflammatory and other benefits. Finally, from a socio-economic perspective, the company creates positive impact for coastal communities, creating jobs and positioning the Faroe Islands at the forefront of #sustainable #seaweed #cultivation.” Olavur Gregersen, CEO and co-founder of Ocean Rainforest, said: “We see the investment by Triodos Food Transition Europe Fund as a confirmation of our business strategy and our purpose to improve people’s wellbeing and make a unique contribution to our blue planet. With the funding provided by Triodos we will be able to further scale our production and capitalize on the huge potential of this global growth market while contributing even more to our sustainability goals.” Read the full press release https://lnkd.in/dJ7GX9PN Triodos Investment Management Farah Chams Marc von Keitz Jonas Skattum Svegaarden Ross Brooks Beinta Unni Marr Olavur Ellefsen Ocean Born Impact Johnny Kahlbetzer Paul Dobbins James Lindsay Taylor Holshouser Chris Wu Tessa Charupatanapongse, M.S.Ed Bernice Tang Sarah Wan-Yau Elissa Glorie Donna Hazard Nito Simonsen Magni Arge

"Seaweed is not a fish!"—one of Olavur Gregersen's key messages at the Arctic Algae Conference in #Reykjavik, #Iceland, on September 5th, 2024. With a metric ton of fish on your deck, the potential revenue is clear: it’s just a matter of time to market and price, with demand always present. But when you harvest a metric ton of seaweed, the challenge truly begins. Seaweed must be made storage-stable within 24 hours to avoid spoilage, and market demand varies significantly depending on species, processing methods, price, and bioactive compounds. Unlike fish, the #seaweed business is about blue #biotech, not just #biomass. Understanding the market and applying the right technology are crucial to converting raw seaweed into valuable products. In the Western world, we need to reduce the costs of cultivated seaweed and scale up production to make it a sustainable and reliable resource that can replace existing sources, improve food and feed health, and reduce carbon footprints across supply chains. This requires active participation from established food, feed, and commodity producers through long-term off-take agreements, committing to price points and product supplies. The conference featured many exciting presentations, including insights from Dorit Avni, coordinator of the #Horizon2020 Project Algae4IBD, on the impact of macro- and microalgae species on the microbiome, and Jorunn Skjermo (SINTEF Ocean), who shared results from some of the world’s most exposed seaweed cultivation sites and related modeling work. Paul Dobbins from WWF highlighted the positive environmental impact of seaweed cultivation, and it was also a pleasure to see the first results from the #CircleFeed project, funded by Nordic Innovation, presented by Johan Magnusson from Lava Seaweed, an Ocean Rainforest joint venture in Iceland. A big thank you to #Rækt, Inga Valgeirsdottir, and Siggi Petursson for organizing the event at the beautiful Arion banki Bank venue.
