[🎄Christmas Saga #3 - What is battery end-of-life?] 🪫 What does “end-of-life” mean? Why is it so important? - A battery is considered “end-of-life” when it no longer works as originally intended, and no longer operates at a sufficient capacity. 👉 For electric vehicles, it is typically considered that a battery reaching 70-80% of its SoH reaches its end-of-life because it would no longer meet efficiency requirements. - EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) : Since August 2023, the Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 requires battery manufacturers to take responsibility for the collection, treatment, recycling, and traceability of batteries throughout their lifecycle. 👉 Battery owners have a legal obligation to manage their end-of-life. From February 2027, a Battery Passport will be compulsory in Europe, which will grant access to information about manufacturing, carbon footprint, recycled content, and expected lifespan. 🌱 What are the different EoL solutions? Repair, second-life and recycling. - Repair: Fixing minor damages on specific battery components to restore its functionality and extend its lifespan for its original application. - Second-life: Repurposing batteries that are no longer suitable for their initial use but still retain capacity for less energy-demanding applications, such as renewable energy storage (ESS), domestic stationary storage, backup batteries for data centers, or in other types of mobility. - Recycling: Recovering critical raw materials (lithium, cobalt, nickel) from fully depleted batteries to minimize waste and support the production of new batteries. ➡️ While recycling represents a cost for battery owners, second-life applications represent a potential source of revenue. 💥 What are the main challenges? - The battery value chain is built around a multiplicity of players, which makes it difficult to provide transparent information. - Second-life batteries market is still emerging and requires further structuring. Today, there are few real outlets for EV batteries, all the more as European second-life batteries are more expensive than new Asian batteries. - Recycling in Europe is also a challenge in the face of competition from Asia, particularly China. Besides, there is a mismatch between battery chemistries produced - with growing volumes of LFP batteries -, and EoL treatment capacities - mainly adapted to NMC batteries. - Transporting EoL batteries in Europe is complex due to their dual status as 'product' or 'waste,' with hazardous waste requiring strict compliance with the Waste Shipment Regulation and ADR rules, driving up costs and timelines. ➡️ You need help to manage your stocks of end-of-life batteries? [🎄Christmas Saga #2 - Battery SoH, kesako ?] 🔋 Battery SoH : what is it? - SoH (State-of-Health) is an indicator (%) that measures the current capacity of a battery, compared to its initial capacity. A battery with 100% SoH represents a brand new battery in perfect working order. 👵 What are the main factors in battery ageing? - Charging habits: frequent use of fast charging or battery exposed to deep discharge damages the battery. - Temperature: the battery in a vehicle driven in a country with extreme temperatures degrades more quickly. - Driving environment: driving in the mountains puts more strain on the battery than driving on the flat. - Driving habits: a battery that is subjected to frequent acceleration and rough driving will deteriorate more quickly. - Odometer: pretty obvious, but the more the vehicle is driven, the more the battery is damaged. ❓ Why is SoH a relevant economic indicator? 1) Boost consumer trust - For second-hand buyers, SoH provides a transparent metric to assess the remaining value and reliability of a battery. Today, prices on the second-hand market do not always reflect the true residual value of EVs. Consumers have no warranty of the real value of the electric vehicle they are about to buy. - With the same odometer (mileage), it makes sense to choose the EV with the better SoH. 2) Improve performance monitoring - SoH monitoring allows to maximize battery lifespan by encouraging good usage practices. - For leasers, maintaining a high SoH can prevent premature replacements, reduce costs, and support multicycle leasing and potential reuse of the battery. 3) Create second-life value - For reused or recycled batteries, SoH is key to determining if they are suitable for repurposing and what capacity they can still offer. - At the end of its first life within the electric vehicle, a battery typically has still >80% SoH meaning it can double easily its lifespan. →💡 SoH is the key for unlocking the potential of the second-hand EV market. ➡️ Our service at Bib is focused on SoH: provide battery health transparency, with actionable recommendations. - Bib's data is based on various sources: OEM data, market data, vehicle telematics, charging stations data. All these inputs are coupled with Bib's degradation model to compute the SoH. - Bib’s SoH allows a comparison by make, model and geography. 👉 For dealers & remarketers: maximize resale value and minimize turnaround time. 👉 For leasers: optimize EV fleet management with live battery data. Better resale of EVs at the end of their leasing cycle. If you are interested in knowing more about Bib’s solution, let us know in the comment section! ⏳More on to come on end-of-life battery management in episod 3!

[🎄Christmas Saga #1 - The EV market in freefall? ] 🚗 The European market for new EV is growing, but not fast enough - In 2024, EVs is 20% of new car registrations, lower than the 25% predicted in 2020. - Some European countries are meeting their targets : Germany, the Netherlands and Norway. In November 24, Norway reached nearly 93.6% EV penetration for new car sales. - By 2030, almost 67 million battery-powered vehicles (electric and hybrid) are expected to be on the road in Europe. ❓ Consumers face many uncertainties which hinder EV adoption - Regulatory uncertainty remains, as in the case of the French EV purchase bonus, reduced from €7,000 to €4,000 as of 1st December 2024. - Consumers lack confidence and are waiting for technical improvements before buying, notably on battery quality and degradation. - Not enough charging stations, even though autonomy is a critical issue. - Still some preconceived ideas about the ecological impact of electric cars. → 🤯 Buy or wait, that is the question! 🌱 The future market for EVs is the second-hand market, which has not yet taken off - Given the high cost of new EVs, consumers might be expected to turn to the used market. Yet, only 2.4% of second-hand vehicles sold in France are EVs. - Resale times for EVs are up to 3x longer than for ICE vehicles: consumers remain cautious due to the volatility of EV prices. - Opaque market about batteries state-of-health (SoH) at the time of resale, whereas the battery accounts for up to 60% of an EV’s value. - Uncertainty as to whether prices on the second-hand market reflect the actual residual value of EVs. →💡 At Bib, we believe that understanding the SoH is key to start the engine of second-hand EV market and make mobility greener. ⏳More on Bib batteries' SoH study next week… stay tuned for episod 2!
