Blue carbon ecosystems such as mangroves, tidal marshes and seagrass are complex environments that sequester large amounts of atmospheric carbon.   However, it is difficult to monitor their carbon stocks, while it is necessary for governments, the civil society, and conservation managers to quantify this carbon in order to better protect blue carbon ecosystems and benefit from these nature-based solutions in the context of climate change.   The conference on 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘖𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 (𝘌𝘖) 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘝𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘣𝘰𝘯 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘴, which took place in Copenhagen from October 8-11, was a great opportunity to raise these issues and provide answers to the community of carbon and EO experts that was there. A session on blue carbon and its potential in Europe was co-chaired by our COO, Marie-Aude Sévin Allouet.   New EO technologies and improvements in spatial, spectral and temporal resolution hold promises for better understanding and managing blue carbon stocks. BlueSeeds works with specialised organisations and space research giants like the European Space Agency - ESA and NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration to harness the potential of satellite technologies to protect these ecosystems.   On our way to innovate!   #Satellite #EarthObservation #Space #BlueCarbon #CarbonProject #CarbonMarket #ClimateChange #Conservation #Environment #RemoteSensing #NbS #NatureBasedSolutions

🌊The Story Behind Blue Carbon: Investing for Impact 🌊 At Fair Carbon, we believe that protecting and restoring our coastal ecosystems isn't just an investment in nature—it’s an investment in the future of our planet and communities. One example of this is our work in Guinea-Bissau with BlueSeeds, where they’re helping to restore abandoned rice paddies to their original form. This restoration sequesters carbon and revitalizes local agriculture, supporting livelihoods and fostering sustainable development in the region. So Blue Carbon projects aren’t just about seeking the highest financial returns; they provide something more: ✨ Restoring Vital Ecosystems: Coastal ecosystems like mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes don’t just allow biodiversity to thrive, but they are also powerful natural tools for carbon sequestration. ✨ Investing in a Resilient Future: By supporting our projects, you're not just purchasing carbon credits but committing to a legacy of resilience and environmental stewardship. Join us in writing the story of a resilient planet, where the real return on investment is a thriving future for all. #FairCarbon #BlueCarbon #Sustainability #CommunityImpact

In June 2024, Timothée Cook and Marie-Aude Sévin Allouet travelled to Kenya to attend the first Annual Cohort Meeting of the Blue Carbon Academy, which Fair Carbon created. The organisation offers guidance to blue carbon project developers. Tailored thematic workshops on carbon projects, a field trip, and peer-to-peer learnings… This was an extremely enriching experience for BlueSeeds, which gained knowledge about mangrove ecosystems and their restoration, carbon accounting, establishing project baselines and scenarios, and funding.   These were important information to develop our West African Mangrove project, which aims to empower communities in the Cacheu region (Guinea-Bissau) to independently sell carbon credits to fund mangrove conservation.   #Carbon #CarbonProject #BlueCarbon #Mangrove #Mangroves #Kenya #Conservation #ConservationFinance

🐠 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗣𝗔 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻: 𝗮 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲   One of Blueseeds' strategies to foster sustainable funding for conservation is to build capacity locally and provide managers with accessible tools.   From October 1-4, our Science Officer Timothée Cook and Project Officer Alvise Ca'Zorzi de Oliveira provided training on sustainable financing mechanisms for MPAs in Mauritius, Rodrigues, Madagascar, Mayotte, Seychelles, and the Comoros.   Participants were able to become acquainted with the financial strategy of an MPA and create one. They learnt how to reduce their costs and optimise their revenues and explore financing mechanisms to fill their funding gap. These included fundraising, tourism-related fees, revolving funds for fisheries and blue carbon financing.   🪸 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻   Our trainers also gained considerable knowledge. Compared to managers BlueSeeds collaborated with in the Med or in West Africa, managers in the Indian Ocean face specific regional challenges, related to preserving high biodiversity hotspots like coral reefs.   Differences exist in the region. For instance, the Seychelles has developed sophisticated tourism-based mechanisms to finance conservation. In comparison, the Comoros face challenges in ensuring to do so partly due to lower tourist attendance, despite an exceptional natural heritage.   Managers are collaborating with local communities to promote alternative livelihoods, thereby decreasing their exploitation of marine resources. The region has a significant tourism potential. However, funding through public participation (e.g. entrance fees) remains to be better-accepted locally, while managing touristic activities sustainably remains a challenge.   🙏 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀   We want to thank Sevahnee Pyneeandy from Réserves naturelles de France for the trust she placed in us, GEPOMAY for the field visit, and CÉLINE maurer from Office français de la biodiversité and Lya Docteur from Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority for their contributions.   We also thank the managers who participated, who are eager to make sure that their actions are sustainable and that the habitats they are protecting thrive: - Lisa Ah Shee Tee - Reef Conservation - Rachele Bhoyroo - Eco-Sud - Anielle Espiegle - Réserves Marines du Nord / Shoals Rodrigues - nassuf Humblot - Parc National Mitsamiouli-Ndroudé - Guillaume LEONSON - Blue Ventures - Latufa MSA - Fédération Mahoraise des Associations Environnementales - Jean Rex Pierre Louis - Réserves Marines du Sud-Est / SEMPA - RAKOTOVAO Guy Célestin - MIHARI Network - Landisoa Andrianina Randimbison - Parc National Nosy Tanihely   Varuna Biodiversité #MarineProtectedAreas #IndianOcean #ConservationFinance #MarineConservation #Sustainability #Environment #Biodiversity #Mayotte
