As part of this partnership, we had the privilege of interviewing Johanna Clouscard, President of Lupus France. 💡Survey | New Parents’ Insights on Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and Its Impact In 2023 in collaboration with Sanofi, Carenity conducted a multi-country cross-sectional survey to understand the burden of RSV disease- emotionally, socially, and economically- not only on infants but also on their parents. By gathering perspectives from 1,200 parents across the US, UK, Spain, and Italy, this study sheds light on the broader implications of RSV infections on family life. Key findings were 👇 ✅ RSV and Increased Wheezing Risk: Children infected with RSV before age 2 experienced wheezing 4.5 times more frequently than children in the reference group. The risk was even higher for children who were hospitalized (7.7 times) or admitted to pediatric intensive care (9 times). ✅ Emotional Burden on Parents: Among parents whose children had RSV, 57% reported moderate to severe emotional impact due to their child’s wheezing. This wheezing also significantly affected 53% of parents' daily activities and social lives. ✅ Impact on Children’s Well-being: RSV-related wheezing disrupted children’s quality of life, with 64% experiencing moderate to severe impact on sleep quality, and nearly half reporting effects on emotional well-being (49%) and physical activities (46%). ✅ Knowledge Gap: Alarmingly, 47% of parents surveyed reported no prior knowledge of RSV disease. ✅ Healthcare Utilization and Costs: The study highlighted increased healthcare visits and associated costs for families dealing with RSV-related wheezing, underlining its substantial resource burden. Patient-reported outcomes provide unique, patient-centered insights, capturing health outcomes directly from patients without intermediary interpretation. This data is invaluable for assessing the effectiveness of medications, medical devices, and procedures, ensuring that healthcare solutions genuinely meet patient needs. 📢 A Major Step Forward HAS is developing guidelines to set methodological standards for PROs in clinical evaluations and public health policies—an important move toward building robust, patient-centered methodologies that place patient perspectives at the heart of health assessments.
