  • "Over recent years, we have seen a concerted effort to undermine the human rights standards that have brought so much safety, security, and dignity to so many on our continent. Intimidating the media, squeezing civil society, and shutting down legal and legitimate protest are choices, and they are wrong both morally and legally. Instead, governments should champion freedom of expression, and freedom of assembly and association – and all our human rights. This is in the interests of every single individual and the modern civilisations that we have built.” – Alain Berset   Full statement by Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe: https://lnkd.in/gYk2NaPc

  • ⭐️ 🇪🇺 Do you know the story behind the European flag? 🇪🇺 ⭐️    The number of stars is fixed, 12 being the symbol of perfection and completeness.    From its foundation in 1949 the Council of Europe was aware of the need to give Europe a symbol with which its inhabitants could identify.    In October 1955, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe unanimously approved the emblem of a circle of gold stars on a blue background and #OnThisDay in December 1955 the Organisation's Committee of Ministers adopted the star-studded flag.    In 1983, the European Parliament in turn adopted the flag devised by the Council of Europe and European Union's institutions began to use the flag in 1986.    🇪🇺 The European flag has since become synonymous with a shared political project which unites all Europeans, transcending their diversity.    ⬇️ Discover some other proposed designs.   Many more designs ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dCvCpeH   #EuropeanFlag #EuropeanHistory #CouncilOfEurope
