Ahead of #WineinModerationDay, Wine in Moderation (WiM) Association held an event yesterday afternoon at the European Parliament hosted by MEP Esther Herranz García. Karen G. leading for FIVS—the federation that represents #thevoiceofwine—joined industry peers, trade associations, and other MEPs to support the drive for responsible and moderate wine consumption, encouraging mindful enjoyment. 🍽️ 🍇Wine is a cherished part of many cultures🍽️ 🍇 The event was an opportunity to hear from Prof. Mladen Boban from the University of Split the latest scientific findings on wine as part of a balanced lifestyle. His research highlighted how moderate wine consumption can reduce mortality and foster social bonds. 🫱🏼🫲🏽The industry is committed to educating consumers on responsible drinking🫱🏼🫲🏽 Aline Bouchez, Senior Strategic Planner at the Parisian agency BUZZMAN, addressed the challenges of promoting moderation in today’s fast-paced world, particularly to Gen Z. She offered valuable insights from a marketer's perspective, suggesting that focusing on benefits rather than restrictions could be more effective. 🍷It's not only about how much you consume, but also how you consume it🍷 This global campaign will be celebrated worldwide tomorrow, 8 November, to honour wine's rich cultural heritage and history, emphasizing the importance of making responsible choices. #moderatewineconsumption #mindfulchoices #wine #moderation Nadia Frittella - Sofia Kottas Bonel

FIVS has been a Codex Alimentarius Observer since 1981, engaged actively in Codex’s work in formulating international standards and guidelines, with a focus on ensuring a fair and competitive trading environment for the wine sector. The FIVS delegation, led by Laura Gelezuinas, Elisabetta Romeo-Vareille and Caroline Henderson, was #thevoiceofwine, advocating for the sector at the 48th session of the Codex Commission on Food Labelling (CCFL 48) this week. Key outcomes of interest to wine were: 👉 Alcohol Labelling: No Codex consensus on work for alcohol beverage labelling provisions & no volunteer to lead new work. We welcome the recognition from many Codex Members that #wines are already defined clearly as a food. Our Conference Room Document* on this subject available to all Codex Members and wider explains our position on this issue. The item will remain on the agenda and may be reviewed at CCFL 49. 👉 E-Labelling: Adoption of guidelines at Step 8. We welcome this as it will facilitate international use of e-labels. 👉 E-Commerce: Adoption at Step 8 of the Guidelines on the provision of food information for pre-packaged foods via e-commerce. We welcome these which should harmonise labelling for online sales and clarify the information to be communicated to online purchasers. 👉 Allergen labelling: the Committee adopted at Step 8 of the revision to the General Standard for the Labelling of Pre-packaged Foods (CXS 1-1985). The revision aims to harmonise allergen labelling of allergens to protect those at high risk. 👉 Precautionary allergen labelling: the Committee adopted Guidelines at Step 5 and work will continue to address unintended allergen presence due to cross-contact. FIVS remains committed to advocating for standards that reflect the best interests of our members and the broader wine sector. FIVS will be advocating for the sector at the 47th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission on 25-30 November 2024 in Geneva, where the texts at Step 8 will be formally adopted by Codex! Colleagues in the AIDV-IWLA are so important to maintain the integrity of the wine sector in safety and reputational terms. Some AIDV colleagues are members of FIVS or collaborate with us, ensuring our important global advocacy is founded on a strong basis. What a great way to celebrate #InternationalChampagneDay; I am in Reims, right in #Champagne country with the AIDV-IWLA (International Wine Law Association) at its annual International Conference. It has proven to be a great introduction to wine rules and laws. And a good starting point for my Champagne specific education. With thanks to PATRICIA BAUDET & Mathieu Roland-Billecart for the excellent visit yesterday to help frame my learnings. Thanks to Vincent Bascou of Henri de Villamont for the great introduction to the complexities of Burgundy winemaking and its markets and challenges. We discussed a range of issues on which FIVS advocates for its members. The most pressing is the urgent need for a consistent interpretation of the incoming EU wine labelling rules among EU Member States. And we touched on other opportunities and challenges such as changing consumer preferences like ‘lo and no’ to GenZ, ‘the Insta-generation’ preference for a more inclusive wine experience. All in the beautiful setting of their autumnal vineyard. Merci! @Francois Schenk @European Commission DG Trade

We are honoured to have participated in the OIV - International Organisation of Vine and Wine “The Global Reference for Vine and Wine” 45th World Congress in Dijon this week, celebrating their centenary milestone. A big thank you to the OIV for hosting such an inclusive and informative event, uniting diverse wine and vine interests from 50 member states and progressing critical resolutions on wine labelling and product analytical limits. Special congratulations to John Barker on the adoption of the new 5-year Strategic Plan for the OIV. We are pleased to see the new strategy emphasises expanding and deepening external relationships and creating a dynamic forum for sectoral stakeholders to engage on strategic issues. This forward-thinking approach resonates with us as we believe that robust collaboration between the public and private sectors is essential for maintaining relevance in a rapidly evolving world. Together we can ensure that OIV standards are both impactful and practical. Here's to a future of continued innovation and cooperation! 🍇🍷🌍 #viticulture #collaboration #wineindustry #OIV100

✨The vital role of Observers for intergovernmental organisations✨ We were thrilled to welcome CAC Chair Steven Wearne to our FIVS members’ meetings. In his presentation, Steve stressed the vital role observers have to play in: - Sharing data, intelligence, and insights into how food safety control systems are working, their pressure points, and emerging priorities. This helps Codex identify & prioritise new work. 📊🔺 - Sharing technical expertise to help ensure Codex standards are fit for implementation. 🔍👍🏼 - Supporting the deployment of Codex standards in the real world. 🚀🌍 FIVS has been a #CodexAlimentarius observer since 1986. As an active participant, today’s strategic dialogue helps strengthen and focus FIVS' inputs to inform a significant stakeholder in global food safety and quality standards. 🛡️🌱 Tim Ryan - Ignacio Sánchez Recarte - Charles Jefferson - Julie Hesketh-Laird
