À propos
The United Nations have declared climate change is one of the major challenges of our time. In that context, teachers require educational resources as well as professional development to be able to offer climate change education to their pupils. The Office for Climate Education (OCE) is a foundation hosted by the Fondation La main à la pâte to promote climate change education in developed and developing countries. The OCE became an official UNESCO center in 2020 with the aim to organise a strong international scientific, educational and operational cooperation for Climate Change education. The OCE offers to primary and middle schools’ teachers free and interdisciplinary educational resources, as well as professional development opportunities and field accompaniment based on IPCC “Assessment reports” and “Summaries for policy-makers”. These teaching resources are free, interdisciplinary, adapted to local needs, widely spread, translated in many languages and facilitate an active pedagogy. Based in Paris, the Office for Climate Education works with a global network of local or regional partners in over 40 countries. The Office for Climate Education began in 2018 as a foundation under the aegis of La main à la pâte Foundation, and founded by the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL), the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), Météo-France, and Météo & Climat, in partnership with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the Siemens Stiftung.

WHY CLIMATE CHANGE SHOULD BE IN THE CENTER OF 2025’S (AND EVERY) SCHOOL YEAR [PORTUGUÊS NOS COMENTÁRIOS] As we feel a new heat wave in Sao Paulo, I can't stop thinking about how climate change is all over education. At Associação Nova Escola, we have just partnered with the Office for Climate Education to make sure we are stronger and better prepared to empower teachers and students to reflect upon this subject. Want to know our reasons? Here they are: 🔥 Extreme weather can interrupt learning - We are at this moment reading several news about classes being dismissed or activities being adapted because of the heat. We also stayed beside the teachers of Rio Grande do Sul during last year with the schools very affected by the big floods. It is like if we have small (sometimes not so small) school closures like the pandemic ones happening all the time, without the same acknowledgement. And even when the classes are carried on, you can imagine how hard it is to keep the routine in uncomfortable situations. 🎯 Education is the main way to learn how to deal with this new era - Schools are the place where we learn to be better citizens. The Brazilian National Standards (BNCC) set “Responsibility and citizenship” as a core competency, which is really connected to understanding the effects of climate change and creating resilience. Unesco and other specialists are claiming that “there is no way out unless we all learn to live differently”. So, it needs to be a transversal subject, covered by every teacher. 🌎 We will have COP30 happening in Brazil and we want teachers and students to get the most of it - COP doesn’t have to be only a political event with closed doors. We should use the event to talk broadly about climate change, as Nova Escola suggests here (https://lnkd.in/ddA-pMS7). And we need to make sure that teachers and students have a voice on it. We are working to identify good practices on climate education and to share them, to inspire more and more educators. If you have a suggestion, please share with me.

Last week, Micol Picasso, Operations Director, and Amina M., Science Officer, both from the Office for Climate Education, were in Milan for the launch of the European SOILTRIBES project! 🌱 This project, funded by the European Union, aims to inspire “back to earth” narratives, fostering new ways of understanding, feeling, and acting towards soils, their significance, and their challenges. This three-years initiative, built on a multi-actor, multidisciplinary, multi-setting, and multi-layered approach, involves 25 partners from 11 countries across various EU regions. The OCE, in collaboration with Wageningen University & Research, is proud to lead the development of resources, activities and tools to promote soil literacy across Europe. Particularly, the OCE will bring its expertise to create resources designed for primary and secondary school teachers, but also for policymakers, science media communicators. These resources will be disseminated on a European scale through exhibitions, as well as national and regional events such as soilathons, soilblitz, living soil workshops, “hands-in ground days” for instance. OCE will serve as the Soil Lab Activator in France, proudly promoting the dissemination of literacy activities, notably in municipality of Nantes Métropole! We are thrilled to be part of this European project and can’t wait to get started! Stay stunned for updates! 🌟
