🌡️ Understanding Climate Impacts on Coastal Ecosystems We’re excited to announce the publication of a new #REWRITE article: "Warming could shift the phenological responses of benthic microalgae in temperate intertidal zones," by Savelli Raphaël, Vincent Le Fouest, Mélanie Becker, Garance Perrois, Fabienne Rousset, Christine Dupuy, Marc Simard & Dimitris Menemenlis. This work, developed partly under REWRITE Project EU, explores the profound effects of climate change on intertidal mudflats. The study shows how rising temperatures and sea-level changes could disrupt the seasonal patterns of benthic microalgae, essential for food webs and ecosystem services. Predictions include earlier spring blooms, longer low-biomass periods in summer, and significant reductions in biomass due to light limitation under higher emissions scenarios. These findings are critical for guiding coastal rewilding efforts, emphasizing the need for adaptive strategies to mitigate cascading effects on #ecosystems and #biodiversity. 📖 Dive into the full article and discover how we’re addressing these challenges here: https://lnkd.in/d8bbPCrz #ClimateChange #MarineBiology #EcosystemResilience #CoastalRewilding
REWRITE Project EU
Services de recherche
Horizon Europe project that aims to rewild and restore European shorelines 💦 🌿
À propos
REWRITE is revitalizing Europe's coastal zones, where soft-sediment intertidal areas span over 10,000 km2 of a 35,000 km tidal coastline. These habitats offer essential ecosystem services, holding immense potential in the fight against the biodiversity-climate crisis. Yet, they face fragmentation and threats, leading to a decline in service provision. Our project introduces rewilding as a nature-based solution to restore these seascapes, fostering climate resilience, biodiversity, and societal benefits. REWRITE is an Horizon Europe project.

🌍 New REWRITE Research Publication! We’re thrilled to share our latest article: "Mapping intertidal microphytobenthic biomass with very high-resolution remote sensing imagery in an estuarine system," authored by Alejandro Román Vázquez (from CSIC ), Simon Oiry, Dr Bede Ffinian Rowe Davies, Philippe Rosa, Pierre Gernez, Antonio Tovar-Sánchez, Gabriel Navarro, Vona Méléder, Laurent Barillé from Nantes Université. Published as part of the #REWRITE project, this research advances our ability to monitor and protect coastal ecosystems. Microphytobenthos plays a vital role in estuarine ecosystems, contributing significantly to primary production and ecosystem function. Traditional monitoring methods often fall short in capturing spatial complexity. This study bridges that gap by utilizing UAV-mounted sensors and innovative modeling approaches to map biomass with unparalleled detail. The proposed method not only supports scientific research but also strengthens the tools available for coastal rewilding—a key focus of REWRITE. By enabling precise and non-invasive tracking, this work enhances our capacity to protect mudflats, one of the project’s three target habitats. 📖 Learn more about this exciting development and its implications for restoration and ecosystem resilience here: https://lnkd.in/dcV9zxJK Science of the Total Environment (STOTEN) #RemoteSensing #EstuarineEcology #CoastalRewilding #Sustainability
