Motown Junk Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Never ever wanted to be with you
The only thing you gave me was the boredom I suffocate in
Adrift in cheap dreams don't stop the rain
Numbed out in piss towns just want to dig their graves

[Pre-Chorus]
Motown, motown junk
I laughed when Lennon got shot
21 years of living and nothing means anything to me

[Chorus]
Motown junk a lifetime of slavery
Songs of love echo underclass betrayal
Stops your heart beating for 168 seconds
Stops your brain thinking for 168 seconds

Motown junk, motown junk, motown junk, motown junk

[Verse 2]
I don't want cause I just get
All your slut heroes offer is a fear of the future
Past made useless cause I'm dying now
Communal tyranny a jail that bleeds our wrists

[Pre-Chorus]
Motown, motown junk
I laughed when Lennon got shot
21 years of living and nothing means anything to me
[Chorus]
Motown junk a lifetime of slavery
Songs of love echo underclass betrayal
Stops your heart beating for 168 seconds
Stops your brain thinking for 168 seconds
Motown junk, motown junk, motown junk, motown junk

Motown junk a lifetime of slavery
Songs of love echo underclass betrayal
Stops your heart beating for 168 seconds
Stops your brain thinking for 168 seconds
Motown junk, motown junk, motown junk, motown junk

[Outro]
We live in urban hell, we destroy rock and roll

About

Genius Annotation

This early Manics hit, released as a single before their first album came out, is one of the few songs from that era that remains a staple at the band’s concerts. They usually perform it after a partial cover of some pop song, such as Motown’s own The Supremes' “Baby Love” or 80s hits such as Van Halen’s “Jump” and The Cult’s “She Sells Sanctuary”.

Here it starts with “Baby Love” after a guitar riff quote of “Sweet Child O' Mine”:

Musically, “Motown Junk” is one of MSP’s most punk-oriented songs. And it also shows in the lyrics, particularly in the nihilistic attitude of the first verse. The lyrics also feature lines clearly aimed at causing controversy, in particular the one about the killing of John Lennon.

The words are basically a cry of youth rebellion against the establishment and in particular, against the status quo in pop music. The highly political songs sampled in the beginning and ending of the song – respectively by Public Enemy and The Skids – may be understood as the antithesis of the mindless music that’s attacked in the lyrics.

The single cover features a clock found in the ruins of Hiroshima showing the exact moment the atomic bomb detonated: 8:15 AM, August 6th, 1945. This may or may not have relation with the “168 seconds” mentioned in the chorus.

What did Manic Street Preachers say about "Motown Junk"?
Genius Answer

James Dean Bradfield and Nicky Wire spoke about the recording in a 2011 interview with NME:

James:

We recorded it in the Power Plant up in North London, which is where “Maggie May” had been recorded, and we’ve never managed to get a lot of these sounds back: the drums, the guitars, or the vocal sound or the bass sound. It just was a magical little moment recording it.

Nicky:

It’s when just the kind of genuine thrill and energy that a band has actually comes out on the record. It’s not easy to get that.

James:

I think your excitement at being in a studio properly with a brilliant producer-engineer, Robin Evans, you can hear our excitement, and you can hear that we’re just ready for it as well. But it’s really weird that they’re not the most sophisticated sounds, but it’s the closest I think we’ve ever got to the Clash really, in terms of sounds.
