Octopus’s Garden
Producer
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade
[Verse 1: Ringo Starr]
He'd let us in, knows where we've been
In his octopus's garden in the shade
[Pre-Chorus: Ringo Starr]
I'd ask my friends to come and see
An octopus's garden with me
[Chorus: Ringo Starr, John Lennon, George Harrison & Paul McCartney]
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade
[Verse 2: Ringo Starr]
We would be warm below the storm
In our little hide-a-way beneath the waves
Resting our head on the seabed
In an octopus's garden near a cave
[Pre-Chorus: Ringo Starr]
We would sing and dance around
Because we know we can't be found
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade
[Guitar Solo]
[Verse 3: Ringo Starr]
We would shout and swim about
The coral that lies beneath the waves (Lies beneath the ocean waves)
Oh, what joy for every girl and boy
Knowing they're happy and they're safe (Happy and they're safe)
[Pre-Chorus: Ringo Starr]
We would be so happy, you and me
No one there to tell us what to do
[Chorus: Ringo Starr, John Lennon, George Harrison & Paul McCartney]
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden with you
[Outro: Ringo Starr, John Lennon, George Harrison & Paul McCartney]
In an octopus's garden with you
In an octopus's garden with you
About
The idea of “Octopus’s Garden” came to Ringo Starr when he was on comedian Peter Sellers' boat in Sardinia in 1968, on holiday with his family after having temporarily leaving The Beatles during their recording of the “White Album” due to tensions in the group. Starr ordered fish and chips, but the waiter mistakenly gave him squid, a first time for him, and he said of it, “It was okay. A bit rubbery. Tasted like chicken.” The captain went on to tell Starr about how octopuses travel along the seabed picking up stones and other shiny objects and create gardens with them.
George Harrison said of the song, which he helped write, “‘Octopus’s Garden’ is Ringo’s song. It’s only the second song Ringo has ever written, mind you, and it’s lovely”. Paul McCartney and George Harrison supply backup vocals and the bubble sounds were created by Harrison, who blew them into a glass of milk using a straw.
