Two of Us Lyrics
I Dig a Pygmy by Charles Hawtrey and the Deaf Aids
Phase one, in which Doris gets her oats
[Verse 1: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
Two of us riding nowhere, spending someone's
Hard earned pay
You and me Sunday driving, not arriving
On our way back home
[Chorus: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home
[Verse 2: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
Two of us sending postcards, writing letters
On my wall
You and me burning matches, lifting latches
On our way back home
[Chorus: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home
You and I have memories
Longer than the road that stretches out ahead
[Verse 3: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
Two of us wearing raincoats, standing solo
In the sun
You and me chasing paper, getting nowhere
On our way back home
[Chorus: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home
[Bridge: Paul McCartney]
You and I have memories
Longer than the road that stretches out ahead
[Verse 4: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
Two of us wearing raincoats, standing solo
In the sun
You and me chasing paper, getting nowhere
On our way back home
[Chorus: Paul McCartney & John Lennon]
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home
We're going home
You better believe it
Goodbye
About
Paul McCartney claimed for years that this song was about him and his future wife Linda Eastman, whom he married six weeks after the song recording. In a statement she left for Steve Turner’s A Hard Day’s Write she didn’t seem to have any doubt about it:
It’s about us. We just pulled off in a wood somewhere and parked the car. I went off walking while Paul sat in the car and started writing. He also mentions the postcards because we used to send a lot of postcards to each other.
Nevertheless, the song’s wistful, nostalgic lyrics seem to imply to many Beatles fans that it might be about the times him and his buddy John Lennon shared over the years, especially given the mock-skiffle sound of the song that harkens back to the band’s early years, not to mention they recorded the vocals singing into the same microphone, like they used to in the old days.

This song triggered a famous exchange between Paul McCartney and George Harrison, captured during the filming of Let It Be:
Paul: It’s complicated now. We can get it simpler, and then complicate it where it needs complications.
George: It’s not complicated.
Paul: This one is like, shall we play guitars through “Hey Jude”… well, I don’t think we should.
George: OK, well, I don’t mind. I’ll play, you know, whatever you want me to play, or I won’t play at all if you don’t want to me to play. Whatever it is that will please you, I’ll do it.
Linda has said,
“As a kid I loved getting lost. I would say to my father – let’s get lost. But you could never seem to be able to get really lost. All signs would eventually lead back to New York or wherever we were staying! Then, when I moved to England to be with Paul, we would put Martha in the back of the car and drive out of London. As soon as we were on the open road I’d say, ‘Let’s get lost’ and we’d keep driving without looking at any signs. Hence the line in the song, ‘Two of us going nowhere’. Paul wrote Two Of Us on one of those days out. It’s about us. We just pulled off in a wood somewhere and parked the car. I went off walking while Paul sat in the car and started writing. He also mentions the postcards because we used to send a lot of postcards to each other“.
