The Ghana Climate Innovation Centre (GCIC) believes that redefining leadership requires challenging traditional notions of masculinity to create inclusive, climate-smart businesses. In November 2024, GCIC hosted two Inclusive Masculinity Workshops for Cohort 9 entrepreneurs, addressing key issues at the intersection of gender, leadership, and entrepreneurship. These workshops underscore the power of inclusive leadership, which is not only a moral imperative but also a competitive advantage. Research by McKinsey & Company shows that businesses with inclusive leadership are 35% more likely to outperform their competitors, while Cloverpop finds that diverse and inclusive teams make better decisions 87% of the time. The workshops explored topics such as self-leadership for sustainable entrepreneurship, balancing business growth with family responsibilities, and navigating institutional and regulatory demands. Participants also gained insights into optimizing hiring processes, unit costing and pricing, and the basics of fundraising. Beyond technical skills, the sessions delved deeply into how traditional gender roles influence workplace dynamics and entrepreneurial decision-making. The Entrepreneurs, who were initially skeptical of the relevance of masculinity to business, embraced the opportunity for open dialogue in a safe environment. Stephen Kyei of Leather On Call reflected on how the experience revealed unconscious biases in his business, noting, “It’s not just about fairness—it’s about creating an environment where everyone feels valued and contributes fully.” Similarly, Dennis Ababio of Agro-Empire shared, “The workshop challenged me to rethink teamwork and decision-making, showing me how deeply traditional gender roles shaped my leadership style.” Through these workshops, GCIC is fostering a new generation of entrepreneurs who are not only climate-conscious but also champions of gender equity. By promoting gender-responsive innovation and challenging cultural norms surrounding masculinity in the Ghanaian and African context, GCIC is driving transformative change. I had the incredible opportunity to spend two months as an intern at Ghana Climate Innovation Centre (GCIC), an institute of Ashesi University and it was nothing short of transformative. In this article, I share highlights from my experience, including working with the Marketing department, led by Anne Sackey and the School of Sustainable Entrepreneurship (SSE) led by Dr. Dramani Bukari, contributing to impactful events like a policy roundtable on clean cooking, and exploring the role of media in advancing climate-smart initiatives. I wish to express my heartfelt thank you to Ruka Sanusi, the Executive Director of the Centre and the entire GCIC team for your guidance and support over the period, as well as your commitment to creating a greener, and more sustainable future. GCIC is proud to support businesses such as Kaeme that are leading the way in sustainability! Kaeme led by Freda O. is a shining example of how entrepreneurship can drive positive change for both people and the environment, leading in sustainable innovations and empowering local communities. Kudos to Freda O. and the Kaeme team for the impressive work done!
SUSTAINABILITY THE KAEME WAY (A speech by our founder Freda O. at yesterday's Cohort 9 graduation of the Ghana Climate Innovation Centre (GCIC) incubator program for entrepreneurs) 👇🏾 As a personal care company, it’s easy to overlook how sustainability aligns with our business goals. But joining the GCIC has been a game-changer for us, helping us uncover how deeply #sustainability can be integrated into our operations. Through GCIC, we gained valuable tools and insights that led to the creation of our #eco-factory—a space that embodies our commitment to sustainability. Today, we’re proud to be on a path toward becoming the first female-led, sustainability-focused personal care brand. One of the most exciting initiatives we’ve undertaken is exploring the use of coffee waste from Kawa Moka Coffee Company to create sustainable products. Our partnership with Clatural is another example of the innovative opportunities GCIC helped us discover. For us, sustainability is no longer optional—it’s an integral part of our business strategy. Here’s how we’re putting it into action: 1. Hiring locally within a 5km radius to reduce carbon emissions from transportation. 2. Ensuring that workers' salaries are not spent solely on commuting costs. 3. Creating a supportive work environment for mothers, offering flexible conditions and benefits. At Kaeme, sustainability isn't just a buzzword—it’s woven into everything we do. We’re excited for the future and the continued positive impact we can have on people and the planet. . #natural #sustainable #memorable #kaeme #hellokaeme #sustainability
