On the sidelines of the maiden Sirexe Conference and Exhibition in Abidjan, Injaro Investments Limited hosted a breakfast meeting with some attendee companies to discuss pathways for more effective and impactful Corporate Social Investments (CSI). These companies included Newmont Corporation, Barrick, Montage Gold, GNPC - GHANA, BCM Group, Fortuna Mining Allied Gold Corporation, Perseus Mining Limited, Endeavour Mining, Foxtrot International, CNR International, and Halliburton, among others.  Discussions that ensued after Injaro’s presentation on how our CSI Advisory practice is transforming traditional CSR models highlighted a recurring pain point: the limitations of current CSR approaches employed by players in the extractive industry. There was a clear consensus on the need to transition from traditional CSR approaches to Injaro’s award-winning CSI model. This model advocates for extractive companies to fund investment-oriented vehicles that generate viable and sustainable economic opportunities within extractive communities. By fostering private sector investment with a long-term vision of community ownership, the model ensures lasting impact and inclusive growth. It was acknowledged at this meeting that the impact of such sustainable CSI approaches significantly strengthens companies’ social licenses to operate, reduces risks to revenue growth from reduced operational disruptions, and bolsters companies’ reputations and brands. One industry insider at the meeting remarked that “companies need to view and treat CSI as an integral component of their bottom line; not as a discretionary expense that can be cut at any time.” Some of the questions that company representatives asked included: 1. How do we select the most viable and sustainable projects to implement in extractive communities? 2. At what point do we hand over successful projects to communities, and how do we prepare them to take over? 3. How can we ensure these enterprises set up are sustainable and have a lasting impact? 4. How do we manage situations where entrenched community interests stand to derail the achievement of project objectives? 5. How are employees of business ventures catalyzed by extractive companies selected, and how do we ensure community youth are adequately equipped to eventually take charge of the businesses?
