Ghana's leading produce, cocoa, is packaged in jute sacks, while flour is stored in cotton sacks. Once used, these fabrics often get discarded. A female-led organization is now turning these jute and cotton sacks into eco-friendly reusable bags. l The initiative serves as an economic empowerment and a model for building a successful eco-friendly business. #DWAfrica #Ghana

Last week, I had the honor of being one of three social entrepreneurs invited to speak about the impact of SOKO BAGS LTD. and the significant role the Ghana Climate Innovation Centre (GCIC) has played in our success at a special meeting with the The Melton Foundation. Sharing our journey, challenges, and triumphs with a passionate audience underscored the transformative power of sustainable innovation. The Melton Foundation a leading advocate for global citizenship with hubs in Chile, China, Germany, Ghana, India, and the USA, hosted their Global Solvers Accelerator Co-Lab workshop in Accra, Ghana. The Foundation's mission to promote global citizenship at the grassroots level through their Global Citizenship Learning Program and Global Solver Accelerator Program deeply resonates with our values. These programs are designed to foster social innovation, experiential learning, intercultural collaboration, ethical leadership, and design thinking. During the workshop, 20 global leaders and social innovators from diverse backgrounds and sectors engaged in enriching conversations and discussions centered on Encompassing Transformation. The event provided a platform for participants to learn about the transformative work of the GCIC and explore synergies and mutual challenges. P.S. Walking into the meeting room, I was pleasantly surprised to see some participants with Soko Bags on the table in front of them. Initially, they had no idea I was from SOKO BAGS LTD. until I introduced myself. When they realized, the room burst into laughter and delight. This really warmed my heart and highlighted how far we have come. Thank you to Ghana Climate Innovation Centre (GCIC) and The Melton Foundation for this incredible opportunity to connect and share. Together, we are making strides towards a sustainable and inclusive future. #socialentrepreneurship #sustainabledevelopment #globalcitizenship #innovation #collaboration #sokobags #GCIC #meltongoundation

Executive Director @ Ghana Climate Innovation Centre | Business Strategy, Operations & Transformation | Carbon Emission Reduction
The Power of Business Incubation My colleagues and I at Ghana Climate Innovation Centre (GCIC) are privileged to meet and work with so many incredible #businesses. Over the next few weeks, I will be story telling about some of these businesses, beginning with a #sustainable #packaging company, SOKO BAGS LTD. Founded by Yaa Priscilla B. in 2022, Soko Bags was inspired by her first-hand experience of the overwhelming #plastic #waste problem in #Accra. Plastic, which accounts for a large portion of #Ghana’s post-consumer #waste, often ends up in open areas, drains, and streams, exacerbating an already severe sanitation problem. Priscilla envisioned a solution – but faced significant obstacles, including limited #resources, lack of #marketaccess, and insufficient technical expertise. Priscilla knew that to realise her #vision she needed the right support to refine her #business model, #scale operations, and meet market demands – leading her to the #buisness #incubation program at the Ghana Climate Innovation Centre (GCIC). Since joining the GCIC, SOKO BAGS LTD. has undergone a spectacular #transformation: the team has grown from just eight to 24 #employees, production #capacity has soared by 500%: monthly #output increased from 1,000 to 5,000 #biodegradable #reusable bags and #revenue surged over 400 per cent. The #impact of Soko Bags’ growth is far-reaching: economically, the company has created #jobs and contributed to the local #economy; environmentally, it’s reduced the #carbon footprint, offering a sustainable alternative. Says Priscilla, “The incubator didn’t just provide us with #tools and #resources; it fundamentally #transformed how we approach our #business. Soko Bags wouldn’t be where it is today without the support and guidance we received from #GCIC.” Looking ahead, Soko Bags plans to innovate further and explore new #markets, leveraging the lessons learned during incubation to guide #future projects. Its #success, a powerful testament to the impact the right support can have. For #start-ups seeking to make a difference, its journey underscores the value of joining an incubator such as #GCIC. #innovation #impact #start-up #femaleempowerment #sustainability #ashesi
