Donald Glover has some thoughts on Star Wars and not everyone is going to like them. “Star Wars, I love it, but sometimes it be super serious,” the Lando Calrissian actor told the Wall Street Journal. “Sometimes it be, like, way too serious. It’s like everything that has to do with the Skywalkers, is like so serious.”
That’s not the tone the actor is hoping to bring to a potential Lando movie, which he and his brother Stephen Glover are developing. “Lando, I think the best part about him is he’s a scoundrel, you know, and I feel like people can relate to that,” Glover said. “And he’s probably like, ‘Man, this war is whack. I need money,’ which I feel everyone can relate to. So, I want to just bring fun to Star Wars. I just want it to be fun.”
Speaking with the Journal about a wide range of topics, the multi-hyphenate artist was asked what he wants to bring to Star Wars with Lando and that was the message: “Fun.”
“As a Star Wars fan myself, I think it’s important that there just needs to be more fun being had,” Glover said. “It’s very hard to have fun right now. It’s tough because there are very serious things happening and those are the only things that connect us, weirdly, so I get why things are serious. But part of the human experience, I believe, is we have a responsibility to have enjoyment and I just feel like we’re lacking in that department.” Watch the full interview below.
A joyous Lando movie sounds awesome. But, before that can become a reality, a new Star Wars movie—at all—has to come into existence. We know that The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the first Star Wars film in seven years when it opens in theaters May 2026. There’s also a second Star Wars movie slotted for release in December 2026. We don’t know which one that is but we do know that, in 2023, the studio announced three potential movies: a forward-looking Rey movie, a Jedi origin story by James Mangold, and a Disney+ wrap-up movie by Dave Filoni. The last one sounds like The Mandalorian and Grogu, but isn’t. All of which is to say, two years ago Disney wasn’t comfortable enough to make news of Glover’s project official. So the chances we’ll see it anytime in the next three years or so seem very slim.
But it is, definitely, still in development. Lucasfilm confirmed to io9 Donald and Stephen are still writing a film centered on Lando but, with Donald’s busy schedule, there’s not any concrete timeline on when it may happen.
Do you agree with Glover though? Is Star Wars too serious? And is Lando the right character to change that?
