In Defense of Audiophilia
It rarely occurs to me to defend my interest in recreating the sound of live music. I do it because I love to listen to beautiful sound. Is wanting great audio crazy? A series of events—and evangelists—led me from a casual like of the pop songs I heard on my tiny transistor radio to an … Continued

Judge Slashes “Unconstitutionally Excessive” File Sharing Fine By 90%
Last summer, a Boston University graduate student was ordered to pay $670,000 in damages for illegally downloading 30 songs. Yesterday, US District Court Judge Nancy Gertner said that was ludicrous and reduced it to $67,000. Thank God. Even that reduced number, she wrote in her decision, is “severe, even harsh.” She hopes the reduced damages … Continued

First Crop of Music Videos Filmed on iPhone 4 Sound In
A couple of music videos have appeared online, both claiming to be the first-ever music video filmed with an iPhone 4. The Anix may’ve got in there first, on Monday, but Flakjakt‘s is a much better watch (and listen). Of course, it’s all subjective, and both are pleasingly polished videos, but there’s no arguing with … Continued

What Is Last Week’s “Alex Meets Auto-Tune” Jeopardy Category?
Presumably in an effort to engage younger audiences, this happened last week, resulting in the respectable, gray-haired host of a popular TV quiz show singing clues through a trendy pitch-correcting software used by artists such as T-Pain and Kanye West. If you heard someone mention “Auto-Tune the Jeopardy” last week and figured it was the … Continued

Mini Orchestra Plays on Microchip Inside CD Case
For $27, you can pre-order a mini orchestra in a CD case. Unlike a normal CD, where you pop it into a player, you just plug your headphones into the case and listen. Albeit, try to “listen.” It’s hardly music, and I very much doubt you’ll get your money’s worth in terms of plays per … Continued

Show Your Love of Music (Even If It Is Just Prince You Listen To)
I’m imagining pre-teen boy’s bedroom, rather than aging audiophile’s listening-room, but wherever you stick this cassette deck shelf or the equalizer coat-hangers, you’ll be able to smugly answer “they’re Italian” whenever visitors ask where they’re from. Rocket is the name of the company, which specializes in music-themed furniture, including guitar-shaped coffee tables and headphone-shaped napkin … Continued
