We are very proud  to have created an initiative, Sustainability in Shipping lunches, which fosters invaluable discussions and knowledge sharing among our members in the #HongKongshipping community. This initiative is designed to facilitate the exchange of insights and experiences from various projects undertaken by our members aimed at reducing #CO2emissions. In our latest Sustainability in Shipping lunch last Friday, kindly hosted by Wah Kwong Maritime Transport Holdings Limited — a Hong Kong shipowner of modern mid to large-sized bulk carriers, tankers, and small pressurized LPG carriers — we had the pleasure of hearing from Jacqueline Chao, the Head of Sustainability in Wah Kwong,  and Hare Ram Sah, GM at Venture Marine Services.  Jacqui shared their experience with working on #VoluntaryCarbonCredits via Gold Standard, a global carbon registry and verification of carbon emission reductions from #retrofits and potential revenues from sale of carbon credits in the voluntary carbon credit markets. Hare and Jacqui then spoke about their Retrofit program and Retrofit Energy Efficiency Measures aimed at upgrading ships for enhanced energy efficiency and aligning their retrofit program to the company's strategic objectives. Yesterday we had another insightful Sustainability in Shipping lunch, organized by our partners at Anglo-Eastern, the world’s largest ship manager with a diverse fleet of vessels. A heartfelt thank you to Anglo-Eastern, Niraj Nanda and Torbjorn Dimblad for their exceptional hospitality and for delivering a very informative presentation on how ship owners can future-proof their operations and stay ahead of regulatory changes. The discussion centered around the #FuelEUMaritime policy, which stimulates #innovation in fuel technology. Special thanks to Capt. Mrugeshkumar Balasubramanian for clearly explaining the policy targets and long-term implications for ship owners, eligibility timeline for marine fuels, and banking and borrowing of compliance surplus. This information is crucial for overcoming the prevailing wait-and-see attitude among operators in the industry. Additionally, we had the opportunity to tour the AE' Emergency Response Center, which is designed to provide swift assistance to ships in distress. This facility underscores Anglo-Eastern’s commitment to safety and operational excellence. In our latest Sustainability in Shipping lunch meetings last week, we spoke about the new regulation on the horizon -  #FuelEUMaritime, which is coming into force from 1 January 2025. FuelEU aims to transform the maritime industry by driving the adoption of renewable and low-carbon fuels and drastically reducing the GHG intensity of energy used by ships, mandating a reduction from 2% in 2025 to 80% by 2050. There are options available for shipping companies and operators to comply with this new regulation,   including a shift towards cleaner, low-carbon and sustainable fuels, and the Voluntary Pooling Mechanism, designed to allow ships to collaborate and combine their compliance balance with other vessels. We thank our subject-matter experts Sanjay Relan, Niraj Nanda, Abhijit Ghosh for sharing their knowledge about the new regulation, and we look forward to continuing this discussion at our next lunch meetings.
